Windows XP Defrag wont actually defrag?

My computer is telling me to defrag repeatedly, yet when I do, it says it needs to be defragmented again. I keep my computer clean and have 78% free space. Also, I just installed 2gb of ram.Any suggestions?

    1. go to run... or press windows key + r at the same time.

    2. type in cmd, press enter

    3. type in chkdsk /f, press enter

    4. allow to complete

    5. reboot

    6. Run Defrag

    If the same issue persists,

    1. run a full scandisk

    2. check all options

    3. reboot

    4. allow to run

    5. wait (could be a few hours pending drive size)

    6. Try windows defrag tool again.

    If the same issue persists,

Look into a third party defrag tool, my favourite being O&O defrag

You can find a hacked copy on the net pretty easily, and it works great.

often when programs are running defrag just cant work correctly, it needs the computer to be completely available so it can move data around.

start by disconnecting from the Internet ether unplug the cable to your network or disable it in the network connections box.

next clean out cookies and whatnot, do disk cleanup.

next shutdown everything running on the PC and i mean everything.

start with the things by the clock, right click on each of them one at a time and look for a shutdown or exit button.

if you have an anti virus program running you must disable it completely in its options.

after finishing with the icons by the clock and anti virus.

open task manager and start killing processes associated with things that may slow down the defrag process, printer drivers camera drivers and programs, any processes left running by the anti virus program, and especially any file sharing programs that may be running.

now run defrag, it with any luck will work on one pass and be done.

note you don't use the computer while its doing this critical data sensitive operation, so do it before you go to bed, or the can, then restart the computer when finished.

you will have to go back into the options for your anti virus and re enable it, and reconnect your network, but the processes you killed in task manager will restart with windows.

    good luck

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com/

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong.

I would try going to explorer, right click on Properties

Click on tools and then select "error checking" CHECK NOW.

If it won't defrag, it is either running into too many errors or you have something running that is constantly changing the data.

    Stop ALL propgrams first

The error checking looks for bad sectors on your hard drive and then marks them as unusable, so that the computer ignores those sectors when it tries to save data to it.

If that doesn't work, try doing both error check and defrag in SAFE MODE.

If that doesn't work I would HIGHLY SUGGEST you get a new hard drive as it may be a signal that the drive is failing!!!

make sure you scan disc first and also manually clean out cookies. Then exit out of all messangers and email and other programs that are in your tool bar. This should make it work and if it hasnt bene defrag in a while it will take a couple of hours. also down load ad-aware to clean some of the extra junk out your computer will run faster.

If you have 78% free space, and yet it says it needs to defragment again and again, then most likely, your page file and/or MFT (master file table) are fragmented. The windows defragger does not defrag these that's why it keeps insisting that it be defragmented.

You'll have to download a third party defragmenter such as Diskeeper that can defragment them. Infact, you'll need to do a boot-time defrag to fully defrag the MFT and page file. Download and try the free evaluation version from the Diskeeper site and see if it defrags the files.

If you look at the windows defragger analysis report (view list of fragmented files) then it ought to give you a list of files that could not be defragmented. Take a look and let us know what files are listed.

The operation gets interrupted if some program writes to disk while its running. try running it in safe mode. besides this a chkdsk and if all else fails, try one of the third party tools (trial versions available if you google for them)

    try running

    chkdsk /f

at the run command. That will mark the unstable clusters on your hdd unusable which may fix it.
