What would you do to a thief who stole your laptop computer?

Question

A neighborhood teenager and his friend came into my home and stole my son's computer while I was at work. I confronted him about it and he said, "I think my friend may have it, but I don't." The two of them were together when it was taken. I asked for his friend's last name, address, and phone number. He claims not to know any of this. I sent the police to talk to him and he told them he doesn't know anything about it. The police aren't helping at all. What would you do if this happened to you?

If your sons laptop was on line, the ISP may have recorded the MAC address.  This is like a computers thumbprint, unique to the network card.  You can contact the local nework provider and ask if that MAC is now in use.  If it is, they can help the police track it down.  

Also, hopefully you recorded the unit serial number, if so, I'd check local pawn shops.

If you really think the cops aren't doing anything about it talk to a different cop, one with several stripes across the sleeve. Possible stating Sgt. or Chief ! Then see what happens. If you still think nothing is being done. Attend the next town meeting and voice your opinion.

Generally if the computer was inside your home, its covered under your insurance, so go buy you another one.   If you dont know who took it and cant prove even with the polices help, then let it go.  It bites what happened, yet more things cold have been stolen, so count your blessings and carry on.

You have two legal choices: set up a trap for next time so they get arrested or move.

That's the problem with laptops, they're portable , in demand, and unless you check the serial number,. you can't tell one from the other.
