there is no single breed that is best for anyone. Everyone has different lifestyles and needs.. and each breed has different traits.
My favorite breed is the Chinese Crested. He has fit my lifestyle perfectly.
PItties and Goldens are not for me.. too much energy. They would make a great dog for someone else.

I adore my Jack Rusell Terrier. Super smart, funny, and very loyal. Very athletic and curious. Medium sized, short hair, and love to cuddle on the couch. This is my biased opinion of course. Some Jack Russell Terriers get a bad rap because they have too much pent up energy....bouncing off the walls and aggressive.

For me, no other breed comes close to the German Shepherd Dog. I will never have anything else except my little rescue girl.

Out of all the dog's I have had I must say my mini pinchure is the best. She is small and can sleep in the crook of your leg, she fits anywhere on you and doesn't need to be picked up, she can jump up. Not too small either. Bigger than a chiuaua. She has big ears, so she can hear anything and is a excellent watch dog. She is really smart and loves everybody, extremely affectionate. She has short hair so you don't have to worry about shedding or brushing her all the time or getting hair cuts. Mine protects my bird from the other dogs..very protective. Good with children too. Roxie likes baby carrots for snacks too. Also, does tricks easy too. Very smart little dogs. We kept her tail..better that way for wagging all the time.

We have an Airedale and she has been one beautiful dog. She trained very easily and love to play. She gets along with other dogs and children and you can take things away from her. The squirrels drive her batty.
Next to that is the Cockerspanial. They are very intelligent and love to playh also.

Schnauzers of course
but between the two you listed, the Golden beats the pitbull by far......

german shepard.
i belive that the reason they are used for crime and police is because, they are strong, good listeners, very loving, very loyal, very smart, and a man/womans best friend.
i had one that lived up until 13 years. he pasted away this fourth of july.
they are really great pets.
=[[ but you will sure miss them.

So I can't say that there is one breed that is the best breed overall *for anyone*. That last bit is what throws everything out of wack because different owners want/need different things. If I had to pick one I'd say a lab is a universally acceptable breed. (Although I've never owned one) I have a doberman which is not great for everyone and shih tzu's which require quite a bit of work to maintain so, my view is fairly unbiased.

It all depends on you time availability, your needs, how much your willing to spend on his/her maintnance, your personality, and your housing arrangement....

I'm going to say the mutt.
Mutts come in all varieties of mixes of breeds. They come in various activity levels, amounts of shedding, intelligence, trainability, size, and color. There's nothing but surprises about mutts. Seeing as most Americans themselves are "mixes" of nationalities, and the American dream is to come from the depths of the low and rise to success, adopting or rescuing a dog from the doldrums and making him/her prosperous is pretty in line with what American culture is or what it is supposed to be.
My favorite dogs of all time are the ones I've been blessed with knowing.
