You are correct as most major cities in Hawaii are filled w/tourists. I've been in March and April several times and never extremely crowded in Kauai. Was even married on the beach outside of Lihue. Stayed at the Hilton Hotel and was very nice.

In my opinion Kauai is the most romantic of places to go in Hawaii as it is very lush and pristine. Has that romance in the air. All the islands have their own feel and unique in their own way, but you can't go wrong w/Kauai.

Spring & fall are "off season". If you are looking to avoid crowds, stay away from Waikiki. You will never find crowds on either Molokai or Lanai (they say they are good places for the newly wed & nearly dead). Kauai is not likely to be crowded, after that the Big Island of Hawaii, then Maui, then Oahu, are in order of least to most crowded.

Less crowded from: Sept. - Dec. (except for Honolulu Marathon week in Dec. in Waikiki) & Day after Easter to early June. The airfare/rooms are less expensive also.

Turtle Bay on the North Shore of Oahu is less crowded.

Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai & The Big Island are less crowded than Oahu.

Hana, Maui is Secluded.

In my opinion Kauai & Maui are less crowded and have a romantic ambiance.

West Maui is a nice place to spend your honeymoon. (Lahaina, Kaanapali, Napili, Kapalua) Spectacular Sunsets & nice beaches that aren't too crowded.

In my opinion the months with lower visitor counts are January into February (Then Presidents Day and the various West Coast ski weeks kick in), Thanksgiving to about a week before Christmas, and September through October. There can also be some slower times right around the end of April into earlier May.

Christmas and New Years should have about 100% occupancy. Spring break for the school kids results in a lot of family vacations as does summer. If the kids are out of school, there will be more visitors to the islands.

Which island do you want to go to? Some are less crowded than others. Oahu is the most crowded at all time of the year, because it has to most people who live on it, plus tourists.

If you are going for romance I would try onr of the outer island such as Kaui where there are less tourists. Or the Big Island where because of it size it seems less croweded.

Maui is second whn it comes to crowds

Ou most croded times seem to be Winter when people want to escape the cold. And Summer when kids are off from school.

I live on Molokai, a Hawaiian island with three bars, two golf courses, one public high school, and no traffic lights. The grocery stores get pretty crowded before they close at 8:30 PM, 6:30 PM, or noon, depending on the day. The largest traffic jam I've ever seen on the island is 8 cars backed up behind the driver's education car. Otherwise, we have a population density comparable to Siberia.

Our biggest tourist attraction is what they used to call a leper colony. The patients who have chosen to remain in Kalaupapa prefer that you call them kupuna(elders) rather than lepers, and that you call the disease Hansens's Disease.

Topside (on the other side of the cliffs that isolate the penninsula of Kalaupapa), we notice it about November. We go out to eat, look around, and ask, "Who are all these people!" Then we realize that snowbird season has begun. We seriously consider waiting until April to go out to eat again, because we do not like crowds on Molokai.

In fact, Norwegian Cruise Lines wanted to bring cruise ships here, but the people of Molokai protested against it, and mother nature turned out to be on their side. The community has worked very hard to block the development of 200 2-acre sites for luxury homes. When a friend came to visit me, he was cornered by some local folks on the ferry who asked if he was coming over to buy land. He said he couldn't afford it, and they were OK with that.

If customer service is important to you, if you want to eat at restaurants that are geared towards tourists, yet, you are seeking solitude, may I recommend the island of Lanai.

If you want a vacation that is different, where you will probably encounter things you are not used to, where you need to remember that you are a foreigner on this island, you may prefer the island of Molokai. One of the bumper stickers popular on the island says "Don't try to change Molokai. Let Molokai change you." I heard of one that said, "Come visit. Spend some money. Then go home." I have never seen that one for myself.

If you're on the fence, try Hana, Maui.

May, beginning of June isn't a bad time, either is September, October timeframe. Those are usually the months that less people travel to the areas. Even the beginning of November and end of April may not be too bad.

If you want less crowded, quiet, more romantic areas, I would suggest you go to the island of Kauai.

I heard that it is actually more crowded there when the rest of the US is having crappy winter weather. Off peak in Hawaii is the month of April so that may be your best bet for cheaper hotels and air fare.

I'm going in June to Oahu and I can't wait!
