Should a Christian not drink beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverages?

Alcohol, consumed in small quantities, is neither harmful or addictive. In fact, some doctors advocate drinking small amounts of red wine for its health benefits, especially for the heart. Consumption of small quantities of alcohol is a matter of Christian freedom. Drunkenness and addiction are sin. However, due to the Biblical concerns regarding alcohol and its effects, due to the easy temptation to over-consumption of alcohol, and due to the possibility of causing offense and/or stumbling of others – it is usually best for a Christian to abstain entirely from drinking alcohol.

Consider this. If you were speaking to a person that is lost, and he knows that he is lost, and he is seeking hope for a regeneration in his spirit, and a difference in his life, and he heard that you were a Christian, and so he sought you out. He came looking for you to ask about Christ, and if He could make a difference in his life. When he finds you, you are standing there drinking beer with a few other people. What does this make him think? Make all the excuses that you want, but anything that you say to him will have no power. None whatsoever. He is standing there thinking, "Well, hell, I'm OK. He is standing there drinking, and he is a Christian."

WRONG! Once you proclaim to be a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, then YOU ARE NOT YOUR OWN, FOR YOU HAVE BEEN BOUGHT WITH A PRICE. You MUST deny your desires of the flesh, and the things of the world, and do the will of God! THAT is how we show Christ that we have faith. In His word. In His instruction. In the salvation given to us.

As for the answer above about Jesus making wine, New Wine was UNfermented wine. Sorry.Those of you that feel that you can do whatever you want to, as long as it is in moderation, are abusing Christ's grace. No transformation, no regeneration, no salvation.

At the time of Jesus, Wine and other alcoholic drinks were consumed, so did Jesus. The over drunkenness is prohibited.

Unfortunately people take it other ways and would ponder that

they have not drunk enough to get into drunkenness. The

cause and affect of drinking has many more harm to society

than doing any wonders for the humanity.

Ask yourself the question, how many drivers have killed

themselves and other innocent while intoxicated. Please

check the stats and answer yourself.

So I would advice to refrain from it.

Some denominations think that it is a sin to drink any alcohol. Others think it is sinful to drink hard liquor. Actually the Bible says nothing bad about any kind of alcoholic beverage. However, it does say that it is a sin to be a drunkard and to be drunk. So my understanding of God's will is that he has no problem with alcoholic beverages but does have a problem with people being irresponsible and succumbing to the effects of alcohol.

Only should a Christian drink alcoholic beverages if he wants to drink them.

Jesus took the wine of the passover (fermented for purification) to remember His blood the rest of time on the earth. Did Jesus institute something sinful, God forbid!!

Paul told Timothy to no longer drink water, but wine. Their wine was ferminted for purification to kill germs from bare feet stomping the grapes to make the wine. The raw (unfirmented) wine was considered filthy.

I think this Question is between you and the Lord. A Christian should definitely never get drunk or buzzed. We are always supposed to keep our weaker brothers and sisters in the Lord in mind, so that our liberty doesn't cause them to stumble ( Because maybe they can't "handle it "). Also is this something you are having trouble letting go of? If you love liquor, or anything as much or more than God then you need to lay it on the alter and give it up. Hard to do .

Yes in general but no specifically . Not if you get drunk. Better to just leave it alone if you have an addictive personality. But there is no harm if you do it in moderation and do not do it to get a buzz.. I dont drink at all any more because I was an alchohalic. No sailor dearly loved his grog like I did. But I gave it up for Jesus... here is my story. ..

I had a big sin problem with drinking. For years I had been getting drunk and asking forgiveness and then doing it again. I was a miserable wretch. It came to the point where I promised God that I would never get drunk again but only have 2 beers a day. This lasted for a few years. Then I got drunk on the ship one night and broke that vow to God.I was at a real low point in my relationship with God. I felt so terrible for breaking my word to God that I was beside myself. God spoke to me the next morning when I had a big hangdaddy, with 3 words,, He said" Quit drinking beer'" I was in my cabin and it was about 4 am and I looked all over the deck my cabin was on but there wasnt any body around. I knew It was God speaking to me, but my own selfishness kept telling me I was just hearing things. A bit later that morning the ship pulled into Honolulu. Still later that morning I got on my bike and rode to a Calvary Chapel and asked if I could use the Lord's house for a bit to talk to God. . So there I was a miserable wreck, loving God but not wanting to give up my sin . I was weeping and pleading with God begging for forgiveness, and still wanting to hold on to my sin. Then there was a hand placed on my shoulder from behind, it was a Pastor of the Chapel. He said whats wrong? I said I am pretty sure God wants me to quit drinking all together, I am positive I heard God speak out loud to me early this morning,he said "quit drinking beer".. Well the Pastor said it sure isnt Satan telling you that. So it must have been God. So I prayed out loud to God and I said Lord, I am not going to make you another promise and say Ill never get drunk again,.because I am never going to make another vow to you without keeping it. I said but I will promise you this, I will try with all my might to never have another drink of anything alchohalic as long as I live. And you know what happened? From that point on 7 years and 2 months ago I have never had the desire to drink again. God knew I was serious this time. He knew I was really sorry. So he took away my desire to drink and I have not had a drop since that day. . It was nothing less than a miracle. Oh what an awesome God we serve....

So please be careful if you do drink , you dont want to end up like I did. I wasted years . I could have been working for the Lord's glory ,instead I was sucking on a bottle of booze.

Verse 17

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit

Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. (verse19)

and verse 21 says,

"It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall."

and the last verse 22 finishing with this,

"But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin."

Not necessarily. The is no command for Christians to abstain from alcohol. We should not be drunkards. The pastors and deacons should "...not be given to too much wine..."

Some denomination do agree among themselves not to drink at all- which is okay as long as they do not attempt to hold others to their rules.

It's funny I asked this same question recently, God does allow Christains to drink, but NOT to become stupidly drunk or drunk at all, just the same as a liar shall not tarry {if spelt right} in God's eyes, niether shall a drunk! But Christians can drink to socialize, Im young so getting hammered with my friends is something I have to give up now, since I re-dedicated my life to Christ!
