According the census below -- states from New Jersey to California have populations greater than New York City:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_b...

    Calif 36 million

    Texas 23.5

    NY 19

    Florida 18

    Illinois 12.8

    Penn 12.4

    Ohio 11.4

    Mich 10

    Georgia 9.3

    NC 8.8

    NJ 8.7

Therefore 11 states (10 if you dont include NY).

  • Metro New York City has about 10 million people (pop)

So here are the states with a bigger population

    TEXAS 25 million

    CALIFORNIA 50 million

    ILLINOIS 14 million

    FLORIDA 18 million

    OHIO 14 million

    Pennsylvania 13 million

    MICHIGAN 10.5 million

With the exception of TEXAS, CALIFORNIA, and FLORIDA. Majority of the US Population is in the Rustbelt and Midwest.

So not including the State of New York (obviously). There are 7 states that has a bigger population than New York

NOTE: New York City is a few hundred thousand more than the entire state of Georgia
