    Debbie... LOL...

Once again we have the option of humor or, everyone getting stirred up and having a food fight all day!

I personally love the platters. However, I was in the restaurant industry for years !!! I think the bigger plate or platter, gives one a better presentation as far as the food goes! I also, like to mop up my gravy with my biscuit so I like a deeper platter type plate too! Hell, give me the charger plate!

Currently wearing my tent dress!!! LMAO

There are chargers, dinner plates, luncheon plates and salad plates. Then there are those platters at the all-you-can-eat food troughs, and the plates they have there are bigger, I am sure!

I still use my antique plates, so I don't notice the difference at home, but I believe you are right, new dinner plates are getting bigger. I have a set of vintage Toulon Petalware, and the dinner plates are 10", and I have a couple of new dinner plates that I bought on sale to serve Christmas goodies, and they are definitely 13". My old rose pattern set that my mother had, has 10" plates. But my vintage Amberstone and Marcrest, that I use every day, both have 12" dinner plates--the chargers are 14", and they are from the l950's. So does the Fiesta.

I think the dinner plates are expanding expotenially to the sizes our waist-lines are getting! STOP THE INSANITY!

When I got a divorce, I let the ex keep the old dishes and was excited about buying a new set. Since I live alone, I was going to buy individual pieces. I was amazed at the selection of sizes of so-called dinner plates that there were. Most of them started out with a 6 inch dessert plate, and the so-called dinner plate could be anywhere from 8-14 inches. Yes, things have definitely changed. Another case of one size does not fit all.

Dinner plates are usually 10.5 inches in diameter. The next size above that (for a round plate) is a charger, around 12 inches in diameter. Chargers are usually not used for food, but some people use them in place of an oval platter. I haven't seen anybody using a charger in place of a dinner plate but it wouldn't surprise me.

We were trying to buy some new dishes. We ended up just buying salad plates and leaving the dinner plates. The plates are too big. Even if you just fill in the inside of the ring, It is too much.

  • You're right, Debbie, dinner plates are larger than they used to be. I've looked for smaller dinner plates and just can't find them. And, somehow, if the plate isn't full, I must not have enough food on it! What's up with that? I've resorted to using salad plates so I *think* I'm getting enough to eat. Full plate = full stomach!

I have two sets of very old china and the dinner plates are just huge. They are much larger than the plates I use everyday. I have noticed that the larger the plate the more I fill it up.

I hear what you are saying and agree totally, its crazy isn't it!

I have decided I am making a stand, and recently purchased new dinner plates for us at home, not a lot bigger then the tea plates, it makes my portions look bigger, its all physiological play, I joined Slimming World, and can pile my plate high with all sorts of goodies, and it works for me, I am hoping to loose my second stone and half in the next month or two !!!

Happy New Year to you !

My Pfaltzgraf dinner plates are the same size of dinner plates I ate off, back in my younger days.

I have noticed the portions of food served at restaurants increase as the years pass. Huge amounts of food are served. You are right, the plates are now platters. And it's a shame.
