hello again....shar pei helppp-----------again?
hi
my shar pei baby is doin good! (previous post)
well im in a delemma here...he hates water.
rain, taking baths in general, garden hose(hes terrified)
you name it...hes probly afraid of it.
as forementioned, he is absolutely horrified of the idea of getting into water to get clean. he hates it with a passion.
when i do manage to pick up his 55lb wrinkly body and carry him across the house and get him into the tubwater, he gives me that "shar pei face"- heartmelting factor 9999999/5. its just soo cute!
or he just claws at me, the tub, and the shower curtain.
what can i do to make the bath somewhat enjoyable?
i already give him lots of praise and treats after, i dont know what else i can do!
btw, hes 11months.
happy new year to all!
thanks,
dani.
lol they wanted to put this under "cats" in the listed categories....

Hello! I have a shar pei pup named Oliver. Like your pup, Oliver is absolutely terrified of water. I have to carry him to the yard when it's raining. After it has stopped raining, he walks slowly avoiding all puddles. It's actually pretty funny to watch. And when it comes to bath time, lets just say it's not fun.
What I've been doing these past few times when giving him a bath is to sit on the edge of the bathtub with my feet in the water with him instead of kneeling on the bathroom floor reaching into the tub. This seems to have calmed him in the tub. My puppy has what my vet calls the "Mommy Syndrome." He needs to make sure I'm there with him when he's scared, so once he realized I was in there with him, Oliver calmed down quite a bit.
Good Luck!

Make the bathroom and the bathtub a place he likes by giving him treats there.
Line the tub with his favorite treats and walk away. He can smell them in there, on the hated tub, and has to go get them for himself.
When he gets really good at that, plug the drain and put about 2 cups of water in the tub. Gradually increase the amount of water until he will get his feet wet.
Praise lavishly.
As you increase the water level, start splashing a little, and gradually start leaving the faucet on. (some dogs really object to the sound of the tap)
Go slow, praise progress, ignore fear.
There are wipes you can use in the mean time, or use baking soda. Rub it into his coat and brush it out. It'll keep him from stinking until he'll tollerate a bath.

hi dani,my shar-pei is 3 years old. he has had only 2 baths since we got him as a puppy. they dont merely have claws but talons!!! he hates water of any kind just like yours. i just gave up. i brush him well and use a damp washcloth to clean him. i really use the washcloth like a massage and he loves it. he doesnt smell either. as u know they are almost like cats in cleaning themselves and staying out of dirt.

Try lining the tub with something to make it less slippery? Or take him to the groomer and have them do it?
