No... if anything it helps me develop more as an individual. I love knowing that I am Mrs. I used to joke that my husband would take my name, but I love having his name. We are a unit, and yet still an individual.

No. Though I thought long and hard about what to do, the mature realization was that the surname is NOT my identity. I got married at 28, had two degrees and a great career, good family background to surname. However, my husband and I realized that there should be ONE family name because we wanted children.

He DID offer to take my surname! But I decided to take his.

Yes. Being committed has nothing to do with it. A name is part of the symbols that we use to form identities. A rose by any other name would not smell just as sweet, imagine a rose called stink weed. Besides, why continue a ridiculous tradition unless of course you're dumb and blind enough to think that tradition has no meaning.

Absolutely NOT! I love my parents dearly and was (still am) very proud of our family's last name. It is a well known and very respected last name where they live. BUT when I married my husband, I became his family. My first family is now my extended family and I now have my family which includes all 6 of our kids and now 3 grandchildren so far. I am not so insecure to the point that I need to identify myself as an individual by keeping my maiden name. After all, I am not a maiden any longer and choose to honor my husband and respect his position as head of our family. I don't need a pat on my back or a thumbs up kudos to feel good about myself. I can submit to my husband and he treats me like a queen. I don't need anyone else's approval and believe me, I can carry my own weight around. My husband travels more time than he spends at home so I carry the complete household and he respects that. I grew up with very strong female examples. Sorry I can ramble on and on sometimes but I am sure you get the picture.

I'm unmarried, but as an unmarried gal we always do that thing where we "test" marriage names. You know, my first name, his last name, and see if we're compatible! (silly, but cute.)

Anyways, I feel it's a sort of "rite of passage" for girls. Instead of losing our identity, we mostly gain another one =)

Yeah, i love my name. Plus all my qualifcations im known by my maiden name. I know my husband would never take my last name so its only fair.

No. We chose to become a couple. I was very glad to lose my maiden name - I don't regard my father as a good person and I hated being associated with his name.
