Can I have cat6 and wireless both working on my laptop?

On my laptop, how can I make the Ethernet and wireless both working at the same time. I have XP pro...and Wireless DSL router. When I go to task manager...it show only the ethernet network is active and the wireless is on standby.....no packets transfered. How can I make both network work at the same time?

Thanks...

You really don't want to do this. I assume you're trying to double your bandwidth by using both concurrently. This can cause issues because most computers do not have device drivers for load balancing disparate devices. The conflict comes in the routing table and determing the proper route out and back in from the internet.

Technically since you can see both connections they are 'working,' however the computer has discovered that your wired connection is faster and has assigned all traffic to use the wired network link.

If you want to confirm that your wire and wireless networks are working correctly, disconnect the wired connection by unplugging the cable, and then try to access the internet. It may take a few seconds for the computer to recognize the connection needs to be changed, but you will see that it is now sending over the wireless link.

In order to force the issue and make the computer choose one connection over the other I believe you can adjust the metric on the connections. This introduces an artificial 'distance' into the math that the computer uses to determine which path is shortest (wired or wireless) and it can cause one or the other connection to be more favored. I've not had to do this myself, since I've been happy to let the computer choose for me which connection is better.

You can't do this without complex software, and even then the router will probably not support it. If you try using 2 connections, the machine will waste so much time trying to determine which adaptor to use that it will actually slow your connection. Use one or the other.
