How do Orthodox Rabbi's turn away a potential convert?

Do they just say No I won't do it and wait until the person leaves and that is considered one time?

    There are a few ways:

"Do you really want to take on 613 laws when you do not really have to???"

"You will be rewarded for keeping the Seven Noahide Laws. You do not have to be Jewish in order to merit Olam Haba (heaven."

"I cannot meet with you until 2010 because I have so many things to do."

"I will discuss the conversion with you once you've completed the following four classes in Hebrew, Parsha, Halakha, and Hashkafah."

They do it various ways. One common way is, "I have too much going on right now, come back later." Then if you come back, fine. They may do it again, or they may not.
