German Sheperd/Beagle mix. OK with young childeren?

A friend of mine has a German Sheperd, and her brother has a Beagle. Well, one's male, one's female, and neither are fixed... You do the math. Their dad said they had to get rid of the resulting litter, and I've offered to take one of the pups. This mix isn't aggressive is it? Because I have a one year old daughter... Of course, she loves puppies. Also, what are any health issues I may have to look out for?

Update:

The male in the pair was the beagle. Personally, I'm curious as to how they managed that one with the size difference... lol And I was asking about health issues in the dog. Also, the pups were born Dec. 29 or 30, can't remember which. When will they be ready for me to pick one and bring it home? I've never had a dog before... And what do I need for it? God I feel like an idiot asking that...

Hip deplasia (not sure on the spelling, hip) with German Sheperd.

    Both breeds are NOT aggressive.

If you getting the dog as a pup and it is raised with children, you will not have any problems.

It's those that train the dog to attack, fight and so on that causes problems.

    You should be fine.

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/ will give you lots of info on both breeds, but it really comes down to the nature of that particular dog. There are certain characteristics common within a breed, but that does not mean that each dog in that breed will behave exactly the same. I do know that it's better to introduce a puppy into a baby's home rather than a baby into a dog's home.

Have you had puppies before? They have really sharp teeth and claws that they will inflict on you, your partner, and your kid for the first year or so of life because they don't know any better. They will be trying to puppy play and puppy play can hurt. We fostered a 1 year old rescue dog for a few months who was given up because he 'bit' the family's child. That dog was the sweetest thing, and did not act aggressive toward my 3 year old niece or any other dog. The only two plausible explanations was that the puppy was playing and the child thought it was biting, or the kid was not taught not to harass the animal and the dog finally bit out of self defense. It is important to set limit and rules for both the puppy and your child. If they are both socialized properly, there shouldn't be any reason for any puppy you get to be aggressive toward your child.

Well you have to think in a different mind set. ALL animals are living and have personalities so they could be a sassy Lil pup or could be a dog you have till its dieing days. I would guess try the puppy out and see if its nice I'm guessing it will be but you never know. AND for your health issues are you taking about your child or the new puppy. i was not understanding that part.

Don't know about that specific mix, but I do know that mutts are almost always hardier and often smarter than purebreds. My little mutt is 15 years old this year.

Those are both intelligent loyal breeds. Make sure you have a good fence because beagles are hunters and will run if they get the chance.

haha who was the Male in this situation? thats a big size difference.

But there both good dogs. If the parents BOTH have a good attitude, Then there shouldnt be a problem,.

Dogs are dangerous because of there owners.

But All puppies will be puppies!! so know that.

generally both breeds are good with children (beware when getting a beagle though they are extrememly stubborn and mine plays dumb all the time so you will probably get very annoyed) but it depends on the dog and the way the 'breeders' have raised it ~ check with the owner for any specific breed problems or problems their dog has expercience
