    Rachel,

There is a new environmentally safe mold killer available. I used it in our basement and It is available locally. Concrobium will take care of the Mold Problem and will be safe to use around your family. It is NON-TOXIC. It can be purchased at Home Depot and applied using a device they also rent. One may paint with a Mold Control Paint over top of it and it will continue to be a benefit to you and your family. Do NOT stay in a house that is unsafe to you and your family please. The Molds that are unsafe KILL many people each and every year. The second site has Home Depot's Site on it. Please be SAFE, not SORRY. Have a great week.

    Thanks,

    Dale

By the way, Bleach does NOT kill the spores and the Mold always returns. You must stop the return and keep it out of your living place altogether! I have studied this and found the Concrobium to be the only real option. The bleach and the Ozone will never stop the problem, only slow it's progress.

The other answer forgot to put "black mold" or stachybotrus on the front of the list. I was exposed to many of those molds for three years at my place of work. No one knew it was there in the air. When I began having extreme nose bleeds at any hour of the day without reason I didn't know why. I don't have any blood pressure problems and had never had nosebleeds in my life. Otherwise I'm discustingly healthy as one doctor said. (he was just kidding) I am a healthy person. This only occurred during the months that buildings are closed up for winter. When I accidentally read an article in the Sunday paper about people this happened to---the answer was to look for mold. I knew this building had a leaking roof for two years previously. It is also built where there is a high water table. I first had someone check under the building......that person came back up with pieces of the backing paper from the floor insulation. It had large patches of mold on a lot of places under there. I myself called a recommended lab for testing and sent these samples. I sent results to my employers safety department. They followed procedures etc. I had been taking more & more products to control allergies that had been very minor before. Life had become miserable year around. I followed through with a good allergist. I have been under treatment for over 4 years and it seems it will be a couple more before I reach a point where I can go on maintainance treatment for this problem. I am MUCH better than I was when I finally found the problem. The exposure (breathing air contaminated with mold spores) for the three years without knowledge of what was happening overwhelmed my system and produced this problem for me. Not all people have the same sensitivity. There are definitely proper ways of handling mold. We are just learning these things and the damage they can do to some people. If you need more information, I would be happy to share with you. I feel this happened to me for a reason. I allready caught a problem happening with a very young relative. Had I not gone through this I wouldn't have recognized it.

    Stachybotrys Chartarum, Penicillium, Aspergillus..

Toxic molds - They are found in homes, businesses and schools near you. These molds can be found anywhere that dark and dank conditions permit them to grow. When you try to kill them, they take to the air, spreading themselves with no forethought to the damage they can cause.

Ways to reduce the risk of mold in your home...

Clean surfaces where there is mold with bleach.

Fix all sources of leaks. Remember, mold thrives in damp conditions.

Install air conditioning in your home (dries the air out, making it more difficult for mold to survive).

Check houseplant soil, make sure it is not always very damp. Mold loves moist soil.

    Keep firewood outside.

Pay special attention to the basement, which is the part of your home mold is most likely to be a problem. Keep it as dry as possible. You may want to keep an air purifier in your basement. An air filter will not destroy mold, but an ion & ozone generator will.

Clean the shower floor frequently to ensure that mold does not accumulate.

Clean the bottom of your fridge, and underneath it.

You can also talk to your insurance company and see what they have to say about helping you with the issue. Good luck, and if you think you do have mold do not ignore it..

I just posted this link to another question based on the Dept. of Energy. It is a little complicated, but will inform you so that you can make an educated decision and put you in the right path to eradicate it. Moisture is what causes the mold and your home needs to breath and have proper ventilation.
