Algebra Help?
I am trying to "evaluate" the following expression.
5x + 3y = 30
There were no numbers to substitute the "x" and "y" variables. Wondering how to solve this question?
Basically, I am trying to find out what x and y is equal to. What times 5 + 3 time y will give me 30.. I have tried various Algebra tutorials online (math.com, etc.) and the only examples I can find are like the following: 6x + 6y = 70 where x and y are given variables. All then that's needed to be done is substitute. But I cannot seem to find any examples on how to solve for x and y with no substitutions... or variables given...

As one of the answers says, you can only express y in terms of x. In order to solve for x and y, you'll need one more equation similar to what you have.

You can graph a solution
plug in a value for X to solve for Y.
X|Y
-----
0|10

That's the thing, there are multiple (infinite) solutions, there is no single answer.
X=0 and Y=10
X=6 and Y=0
These are both valid and true solutions. It's easy to convert these answers to points on a grid.

5x+3y=30
first solve for y,
3y = 30 - 5x
y= (30-5x)/3
Now substitute this for the y in 5x+3y=30, you will get the value of x.
now to solve for y, substitute the value of x u got from above.

5x + 3y = 30
rearranging
3y = - 5x + 30
y = -(5/3) + 10
This is equation of a line with slope -5/3 and y- intercept of 10
