American Girl Doll.......?
I am 19, engadged and have a 10 month old girl. I go to school part-time and work sometimes, but I am mostly home with my daughter.
Ever since she was 2 weeks old, I took her everywhere. She even goes to my college's daycare center!
We live in Chichago and as a little girl, I had three American Girl Dolls. Evenutally I want to pass them down to my daughter when she gets a little older.
My fiance and I have been talking about possibly having more children. We probally won't have another until after she turns one, but just incase, I was wondering if I should get her a Bitty Baby so she can see what it's like to have a little sister?
I want to get her one for her first birthday. Would it be a good idea? She has a couple of cloth dollies and a plastic one and is very good with them(she also has loads of stuffed animals). Should I get her the doll? Or should I just wait until she's three or older to get her a AG Doll. Please help!

For people who do not know, this doll line is a baby doll with out hair. She has a soft huggable squishy body.
I would go ahead and get her the doll. I have many reasons for saying this. With your help she is ready to play with a "baby". It will give her a friend to love and bond with. Developmentally her playing with a doll will be great because she will learn to dress and use imaginative play with her own doll.
My son was two and we purchased a Bitty Boy twin for him. He learned to dress and comb the hair of his doll. But it also taught him to tie, buckle, and button himself. He would tow that little guy around in his wagon for hours. It was adrable and great for him.
The quality of this doll line has proven it's self over the last 20 years. with a 100% guarantee you can't really go wrong. If you have issues there will be a doll hospital for you to send her doll to if repairs become necessary. Dolls from this product line are meant to become heirlooms. They start as toys. They are meant to be loved and hugged. But you won't ever need to buy another one because of the warranty and availability of a long term company.
I would begin with some simple clothing for the doll. Take the small breakable or fragile parts to the side. As she gets older you can add in the small child safe tea sets. Teaching her early to care for something and respectfully handle a pretty thing will benefit you later on.
You aren't alone in wanting to look into this product line. Everyday I speak with other mothers that want to teach their daughters through dolls. I am an American Girl collector myself so my opinion is a bit based. :D

Oh I loved those dolls when I was little. The most fun part of them for me was looking at all the accessories. I would wait until she is a little older to get her a bitty baby, maybe when you are pregnant with your second child. Use it to explain what is growing in Mommy's tummy. Definitely give her your dolls when she gets to be old enough for them. She will love them.

To be honest...I think she is too young. She isn't going to see the relation to a doll and a baby. She be playing with the doll one minute and the next it will be lying on the floor. Personally...I would probably wait to get her an AG doll until she is a little older and can appreciate it. My 2 cents.

[Bitty Baby so she can see what it's like to have a little sister]
The above reasoning in my opinion shouldn't be. You don't compare a doll to a human being..This is a doll baby. There's no human being characteristics about this doll baby. Human beings have personalities, they talk, etc. All your little girl is going to do with this doll is throw it down, pulled her hair, take it apart if she can (this is what the average little tots does to doll babies).
If you wish to have this doll baby as an additional to your present collection of dolls, then buy it for her.

I would wait until she is 5 to get the American Girl doll...Right now..A nice Madame Alexander Huggums doll would be perfect ( if you want to get her a good doll) They have different outfits and are snuggly. My daughter is three and got her first one when she was 2 months..she loves it still..It has been through the wars.

I'm now 16 and I got a Bitty Baby for my first b-day. I loves it and it helped me learn the value of certain things, as my parents explained it was a "special" dolly. I think it's a good idea for a mild-mannered child and encourages imagination and creativity. :)

i think that it would be fine as long as it's age restriction isn't for older children...my best friend buys baby dolls for her daughter and it gives her an idea and good positive feeling about having a little sister.....good luck

I would get her the doll, but I wouldn't let her play with it; I would get her one every year for every occasion (that's how my parents did me from birth-now; I am 27).
I still get dolls and their clothes for my birthdays, Valentine's, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas!!! I have AG's, Barbies, and the life-sized babies that I have collected over the years.

You should wait until she's older because if she's not gentle with the doll, it will break, and that will be a shame.
