How to buy a gas boiler for a house?

We're looking to possibly buy a home with a 30+ year boiler. We'd need to replace it and wonder at the cost. Our agent said somthing like 6 grand but I was researching and found some in the range of $2-3,000. Unfortunetely, I have no idea what specs to look for when purchacing somthing like this. I know they have different BTU's, but I dont know which one is better, etc. Would anyone be able to assist me?

The home is about 1900 square ft, 2 floors, 1 bath, if that helps at all.

Thanks in advance.

you are right about the price range. 4 years ago i bought a burnham brand and it was $1,800 as i recall and it is planed for a 2,400 sq. ft. 2 story in northern wyoming. since the rest of the system is already in i dont think installation cost should be that high. while i am happy with my brand i would suggest buying a well know brand that is easy to get parts for in your area. i dont know where the 6 k would come from?

$3000 is what i paid for a new boiler 3 years ago for a 4 bedroom house with a 20 year warranty. $6000 would be a high efficiency type but the warranty is only 15 years. if you call a store to buy and install one they can send someone out to see what size you need

you need to measure the amount of baseboard you have in your house.. that is how you size the boiler. I charge roughly 3400 to replace a boiler. Go to a real plumbing supply house and they can assist you.
