For about a week before, I had Braxton Hicks contractions and I went through the whole nesting thing where I had to scrub every inch of my house. When I went into real labor the pain was pretty intense and it took a long time (62 hours) but I only got to 3 cm and then they had to induce me because I failed to progress.
I highly recommend the epidural regardless of what anyone tells you. There is no need to go through pain. My cousin is a labor and delivery nurse and she told me that nurses will sometimes discourage it because they have to check on you more frequently, but if you want it you should get it.
Yes - you will have some pain. Feel free to yell at everyone - it is the only time you'll get away with it. And if there is a name that you really like but your husband doesn't - bring it up in the middle of a contraction and he'll agree. The end result will be well worth it when you have that beautiful baby.
Congrats!

I was in labor for 49 hours, because i wasn't dilating and I had to be given pitocin. My water broke after 24 hours of labor, another 10 hours later I got an infection and had to be given antibiotics. My son was born with apgar scores 0/4/6. The pediatrician told me he will have some developmental delay, luckily, he is very smart and very healthy. Good luck to you and if you feel something is not going well, ask the doctor and make him pay attention to you. Because I didn't, OB would not take the infection and loooong labor seriously and told the nurse I don't need a C section because I am young and will be fine. And my son almost died because of that lazy moron.

With my first my labor broke aroun 11:30 pm and I delivered at 1:51 am Thanksgiving Day! So 2.5 hrs of super hard labor. My labor began with my water breaking and instantly contractions followed. Basically it was exactly the way the movies depict it, which is exactly what I was not expecting!!
My next two labors were 1 hr long and 40 minutes long respectively.

At my first contraction I went straight to the hospital and got sent home just as quick. This may sound crazy, but after that I went out to eat, did the food shopping and walked around some stores to try to get the labor to progress (my husband was with me the whole time). I'll tell you, I never got my food so fast in a resturaunt! But it still took another 12 hours to get under 5 minutes per contraction! GOOD LUCK!

Not sure if you're still reading these but i'll tell you my story anyway =o)
I was woken at about 2am with my first contraction. By 10:30 my contractions were 8 mins apart. I rang the hospital and they told me to stay home, being my first pregnancy it's likely the contractions would fizzle out. Yeah right!
At 11:30 my contractions were 5 minutes apart and the pain was pretty unbearable so i told my other half it was time to go.
By the time we got to the hospital it was 12:15(we live 45mins away) my contractions were 4 minutes apart. I was rushed straight to the midwifery ward and taken to a consultaion room (not before being stopped by the midwife who talked to me on the phone to say to me 'oh you surprised yourself hey?' could have strangled her...
Got checked out and i was 9cm dilated... they refused to give me an epi saying that it was too late.
I was finally given a shot of pethidine at 2:30, it'd warn off by about 3?? Not sure, it's a little hazey (lol) My waters still hadn't broken, so i asked the midwife to break them.
The midwife then told me to push (i hadn't gotten any feeling that i needed to push) so i pushed... and pushed and pushed and pushed. It took me an hour to push his head out.
minutes later i had a baby boy in my arms 8 pounds 4oz... Not bad considering i'm not even 5ft!!!!
GOOD LUCK!!! I hope everything goes well!!!

I was sound asleep and was awaken by my waters breaking a month early. I called the doctor who told me to come in, then called my mom to come over and drive me to the hospital b/c my husband was out of town for work. I was having no contractions so they gave me pitocin. I started having contractions, but didn't feel them, never got dilated past 2 centimeters. Hours later, the baby's heartrate was declining with the contactions so they did a c-section. The cord was wrapped around her neck, but she was fine. She stayed in nicu for 10 days b/c she was preemie and weighed 4 lbs. 1 oz. Hope you have a wonderful labor and delivery. Congratulations!

I hadn't been having any contractions, and was only 1 cm dilated when my water broke. My contractions were just starting and were about 5 minutes apart when I got to the hospital, so I was put on a pitocin drip. That was about 11pm on April Fool's day, and my baby was born at 4 pm Monday afternoon.
My personal opinion: Pitocin drips SUCK! They make your contractions come faster and stronger (to speed up dilation and effacement), and you're tethered to the iv pole, so you can't walk around much. :D
Jillian: My son is only a week older than yours. I was wishing I could have had a c-section though. :)

I had an ultrasound and found out I had low amniotic fluid, so I had to be induced. I was given Pitosin and then Cervadil. Contractions came regularly every 5 minutes. I couldn't take it anymore (after 12 hours of contractions) and I finally requested for an epidural. Then the rest of labor was pleasant.

I had the same problem with my little one and ended up having to be given pitocin after a week of irregular contractions and going two weeks overdue. I ended up having a c section after 10 hrs of pitocin and only dialting to 5 centimeters, plus my lil bean wouldn't drop into my pelvis past a 0 station.

I had a scheduled c-section, but my water broke on it's own 2 days prior and contractions started right after.
I called the hospital...it was 2am and they said "are you sure it's your water?" and I said yes. They didn't seem to believe me and asked if the fluid could be contained in a maxi pad and I laughed. They asked how I was containing the fluid and I said "I have a soaking wet beach towel in between my legs, thank you."
Sorry, that just stands out in my head.
They had me come in right away, where I labored naturally for almost 10 hours because my Dr. was in an emergency situtation. Finally they did the c-section and it was all over so quick. I want to replay hearing her cry in my head so bad....I want to relive that day so bad.....
Just please try to take everything in. You will appreciate that day for years to come.
HAVE SOMEONE TAKE PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck, almost momma!
