XBox 360 Error?

I get an E 68 error when i turn on my xbox. I looked it up, and it turns out to be a hard drive problem. I take out the hd, and it boots up just fine. The only thing Microsoft will tell me is to go by new hard drive. Here's the thing, though. It was working just fine, I left and went to town for about an hour or so, i come back home and this happens. How the hell does something like that happen when the xbox was off and in the matter of an hour time span. Does this mean that all of my saved games, and everything else I've downloaded is lost? Someone Please explain this to me, because it's obvious that Microsoft doesn't have the answers to anything!

Update:

and yes, I get a single flashing red light in the lower right quadrant.

Yes, you will lose all saved games and all downloaded stuff like arcade games. However, you will be able to recover your account with all achievements and gamer score. As for the HD, I don't know, then again the 360 is not exactly a dependable machine.

no none of your saved stuff will be gone. it will still be there. its all connected to your account. i bought a brand new 360 and gave my old one to my brother and he kept the old hard drivw with it. and i just recovered my account and all my save were still good. dont ask me how it works it just did FOR ME. when i switched my account over i was worried if my halo3 save would be gone. and they werent. i dont know if it had somthn to do with halo3 or if its just the 360 account the save it to. but evert thing should still be on your new hard drive. it could have been a virus on your hard drive...yes you can get virus's on h 360 but its really really hard but anything is possible with HACKERS

Yeah, unfortunately, you're pretty much screwed with whatever you have on the hard drive, unless you can somehow transfer some of your stuff on one of those 512 MB memory cards they sell.
