Formatting DVD+RW discs?
I need to completely unformat DVD discs that I've used on my computer for recording DVD videos. Using Nero Quick Erase or it's Full Erase does not do this. I've looked at the answers to previous similar questions and they don't touch on this subject.
The reason I need to unformat is that they are rejected by my Sony RDR-HXD870 DVD recorder and there's nothing in the supplier's manual on how to do this, it only says disc are automatically formatted upon insertion, and if I try the format mode I get the message ""Cannot make this setting with the currently loaded disc type or setting"
If it were a floppy disc I could pass the floppy throgh a strong AC magnetic field, but DVD discs are formatted optically.
Any ideas anyone?

You need to understand what format means.
It means getting it ready to work on that device.
If its been formatted already for another device should not stop it from being able to be formatted again.
Use your burner to format it again. If it doesnt work right click the burner in my computer >properties
go through the properties tabs and checked everything is selected on or off ok.
some info:
Important If you cancel the process of formatting a DVD-RAM media disc during a full format, the inserted disc cannot be ejected from the DVD drive, and then the disc seems to be corrupted. In fact, there is no real corruption of the disk. The disc appears to be corrupted because the full format is still going-on in the media disc. You can wait for about 20-60 minutes for the media to finish formatting, and then the media disc becomes usable again and the media disc is formatted completely.
SYMPTOMS
When you format a DVD-RAM disc for the first time in Windows Vista, the formatting operation will be complete in 20 to 60 minutes. The formatting operation continues for this period of time even if you try to cancel the operation before the formatting operation is complete. Additionally, if you eject the disc or if you restart Windows Vista, you will forcefully interrupt the formatting operation. When you forcefully interrupt the formatting operation, the DVD-RAM disc is no longer recognized in Windows Vista.

CAUSE
This problem occurs because the DVD-RAM disc is altered to the un-preformatted state. The un-preformatted state occurs when the formatting operation is forcefully interrupted before the formatting operation is complete. Because Windows Vista cannot format an un-preformatted DVD-RAM disc, the disc becomes unusable.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, do not interrupt the formatting operation before the formatting operation is complete. You must wait for the formatting confirmation dialog box to be displayed. This dialog box confirms that formatting is complete. Then, the DVD-RAM disc will be usable.

Three replies but none really relevant to the original post!
The OP's problem was specifically with DVD+RW media not DVD+/-R or DVD-RAM discs.
Formatting problems can often be caused by a dirty head (laser lens) and using a cleaning disc can resolve the issue. It should always be possible to reformat a disc formatted in another device but some domestic recorders, such as Sony, can be stubborn about this. I have also read that Sony favour Verbatim media although I have not direct experience of this.
Sorry I don't have a more definitive answer but I'm still looking around for solutions!

Format means Erase.
You need to use someother DVD, as the formating done by Nero is not compatible with your sony recorder.

If the discs are 'record once' and not 'rewritable' then you cant do anything. If they are rewritable discs then Nero should have cleaned them. Have you checked for updates for Nero?
