How should I dress if I really want to dress like a person really did from the 1980s?
There is going to be a Winterfest dance at my school, and the theme is 80s. I know everyone is going to do the 'typical' 80s look, or what they think is 80s, with the guys wearing big, gold chains, and the whole Run DMC get up. What type of things should i wear (I have a $350 spending limit) to really get a authentic 80s look?

And I forgot to say, that I'm a male.

Depends on what look you want. My suggestion would be to rent 80's movies and emulate a look that you like.
You can obviously cancel out the 80's hip hop look--it IS a bit obvious, so good for you wanting to do something different.
The only other couple of styles I can think of are basically either yuppie or new wave/punk.
Rent "Pretty in Pink" Andrew McCarthy and his crew are the yuppies (khakis, pastel shirts, etc) John Cryer and Molly Ringwald's friends in it are the new wavers (vintage suits with lots of band pins, spiky hair, etc)
It was made in 1986--can't get more authentic 80s than that.

from head to toe:
starting on top........ if you have bangs, tease them. how? grab your curling iron, take the top half of your bangs and curl them "up", hairspray them until they stand on their own. do the same with the bottom half, but curl under. SPRAY!
you can either put the rest of your hair in a side ponytail or if it's not long enough, just clip it "half up, half down". Or, something REALLY 80's, if you can find a "banana clip" that would be soooo authentic! just do your bangs and the rest of it goes in the clip.
makeup: wild colors were the key. don't be afraid to go crazy.
earrings: ANYTHING big, colorful, plastic. cooridinate with your outfit. i had a lot of blues, yellows and DAY GLOW PINK when i was a kid. bangle bracelets were good, jelly bracelets too, but that was more the Madonna style.
IF you can find an acid or stone washed jean jacket, wear it. underneathe, you can wear anything off the shoulder, or boatneck, that's good. or the person that suggested the sweatshirt thing, that's REALLY 80's, we all did that to our sweatshirts after the movie FLASHDANCE came out. Or if you have an oversized t-shirt type of top, wear it, BUT, grab it from the sides and tie it up with something, like scrunchie.
ANY type of mini skirt is good. if you can find one that matches a jean jacket, that's always good. I used to have an acid washed one with a hint of red. and a jacket with a hint of bright teal blue.
if not, then find a simple black mini, preferably that soft cottony material. something that will be fitted to your body.
Next, footless tights. any color, the bolder the color, the better. you can actually find these anywhere, they back in style. My daughter has them.
some have lace on the bottom, i used to have some with and without lace. theyr'e very versatile.
SHOES: ANY type of flats, any color. or if you can find some Jelly shoes, that would be PERFECT!!!!! i had a million pairs! i also wore those plain tennis shoes, KEDS. i had all different colors.
HAVE A GOOD TIME!!!!!!
i had a great time dressing that way in the 80's and now my 13 year old is having fun with SOME of those styles too.

depends if you go for early or late 80s 1981 was the start of new romantic glamour cocktail wear eg human league pixie boots kilts glittery scarfs and the dreaded wedge haircut or later on in the 80s shoulder pads acid colours t shirts with slogans on i think the early stuff was better and the blokes wore wide trousers and pointed shoes and even make up . what ever you decide im sure it will look ok

first of all its Goth no longer Gothic. Gothic describes one in all those shape. Secondly Goths oftentimes costume in darkish colorations and black it truly is likewise important to % out you as one human beings. To be a Goth you could desire to hearken to actual Goth music no longer the Marylin Manson toddler bat crap> in case you don't be conscious of what a toddler bat is look it up. The goth character is a gloomy humorousness, sarcasm and a leaning in direction of being psychological or inventive. and that's it. in case you have those characteristics congrads you're a Goth. in case you do no longer than you're a wannabe.

tight, high waisted, acid washed jeans; colored socks (preferably two pair, different colors) with white pumps; off the shoulder neon splatter paint sweatshirt (with the sleeves, neck & bottom cuff cut off), cheap sunglasses, lots of make up, tons of jelly bracelets/slinky bracelets & BIG hair
well, in that case...i say go for the miami vice look...off white linen suit (buy one at goodwill...& make sure it fits you a little big), pastel button down shirt with the collar up, roll up your sleeves, wear some huarache shoes, a pair of ray bans and presto chango, you're a dork from the 80s. google julio iglesias or miami vice to see the look i'm talking about
