How do I install a netgear wireless router when it is missing the setup cd?
My dad bought a refurbished wireless router lacking the smartwizard cd- in it's place is a piece of paper directing me to download the software off of netgear's webiste, but I can't find the software anywhere for download- the wireless router model number is WGR614 v6. Thanks!
the router didn't come with any directions- just a slip of paper with netgear's website (I thought I said that)
any idea where to find the IP address?
any idea where to find it on netgear's website? I know I have to download it from the website guys- but I can't find it anywhere- this is very frustrating- and the router is just a useless piece of plastic right now-a waste of money

I have that same router. You don't need the smartwizard CD to install the router.
Here is the support page for your router: http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/wgr614v6.asp
Completely Avoiding the SmartWizard
Most router owners prefer the SmartWizard. Not to mention, it's continually being improved to be more useful for special sitautions.
However, there are cases you want to bypass it:
When it puts you in a loop where you can't reach Basic Settings.
If you are an advanced user who needs custom settings.
Your network is not connected to the Internet.
To Avoid the SmartWizard
Unplug the router power cord.
Turn off the computer.
Plug in the router to power.
Attach the computer to one of the router's LAN ports.
Turn on the computer, but do not open a browser.
Go to Start > Run, and type http://www.routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm. The browser opens and goes straight the the router's Basic Configuration page. (If the Basic Configuration page does not appear, repeat instructions from Step 1.)
Important: Click Apply, even if you don't make changes. Otherwise:
The wireless features are not enabled.
The settings are not saved.
The SmartWizard runs next the next time you open a browser.

Do not download the CD it is easy to do without the CD. hook up the modem into the Modem spot on the Router and then Hook your computer in to the router. The default settings should be good enough for a wired network to run.
If you wish to change the settings here is how it is done. (general for netgear / linksys / DLink)
ip http:\\192.168.1.1 or http:\\192.168.0.1
Login and password is one of the following and my beliefs are as such
Netgear: Login name: admin Password: password
DLink: Login Name: admin Password: (leave blank)
Linksys: Login Name (leave blank) Password: admin
Once you are in there you can change any settings you want but most likely they are all set right for your modem. The wireless connection is only thing i would change. I would first change the SSID: this is what name is displayed when you search for wireless networks in the area an uncommon name like Tsunami or your middle name works well. Next enable WEP or WPA encryption so noone other than yourself or anyone you give this code to can use your internet. The WEP key has varries on the ammount of numbers/letters you need. Standard for netgear is 26. I would take something easy to remember but not easy to guess it uses numbers 0-9 and leters a-f just remember leet speak where 1's are l's 5 are s's and 0 are o's. this has some words like faced f00d ace ca5e 1ace c0de5 50da5. I use this to remember my codes and it usually works well. Other than that you should be up and running.
Good Luck

Thats no problem at all. The cd is better for beginners but I rarely use a CD when installing a router. You need to connect your PC to one of the LAN ports on the router, note, there is a WAN port for your internet connection, it is usually separated from the LAN ports though. Once that is connected drop to the cmd line (In xp and vista click Start->Run and type 'cmd' and enter. Now in the black command window you want to type "ipconfig /release" enter to release any IP you had. Then type "ipconfig /renew" to get a new IP from the router. When it gets the new IP it should list the Gateway address, I believe the default for netgear is "192.168.0.1". once you have the gateway, goto your web browser and enter the gateway IP preceded by http://0.0.0.0/
That will take you to the router setup page and I believe netgears default user and pass is user:'admin' pass: 'password'. Once you are in the setup page you will need to make sure the router as obtained a valid IP from your Modem. It is usually under the Status page and there should be a release/renew button. If the WAN IP starts with 192 it is incorrect and you need to release/renew the IP or power cycle the modem and then the router. Good luck. Also, you may want to update the firmware if it is a older router, make sure you are connected with an ethernet cable if you do and not wirelessly.

I believe that this router has 4 ports at the back, so take a RJ45 (ethernet Network cable) and plug one end in to your PC/Laptop, and the other in to the netgear. Make sure that you do not assign any IP address on your PC/Laptop.
1.Connect a computer to the LAN port of the router using an ethernet cable.
2.Open up a browser and type in the following URL: http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.168.1.1/ (depending on the model number of the router)
3.Type the Username as admin, and Password as password. Then click OK.
This will take you in to the router, and from there configure it, you dont need a setup Cd for routers

connect the router up using the ethernet cable, open internet explorer and type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar and go, use admin for the name and password for the password, you will now be into the routers set up page, select auto configure and let it do the rest, you will then need to enter your ISP username and password and that should get you online, then just set up[ the wireless

Netgear gets tricky.
Normally set the IP to 192.0.0.1 and make sure all PC's have the same gateway.

The netgear site is very good for software. If you let everyone know your router model - someone will give you the link. wdw

You don't need any installation CD or Driver.
Just plugin your router and connect the network cable.
you can access your router by using your router IP 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.
Router Id: admin
Password: password or 1234

You may find you do not need the disc. When I installed mine all the disc had on it was registration details, nothing about the installation. Otherwise se if you can get instructions off the manufacturers website
