Fiction. There was never a Sweeney Todd. The character originated in 1846 in something called a "Penny Dreadful", a type of horror tale of the era published in serial form.

This TRUE story can Be traced back to the 1800's Where a Man Commit-ed Similar Crimes.
maybe not the exact same story, But- the play/movie is Based or inspired by a man of the same Storyline.

well the new movie is fictional but it is all based on a semi true story todd himself i dont think was real but it actually did happen the whole humans in pies thing(with out the singing). the story was made into a book book made into a play(musical actually) the musical was made into the first sweeney todd movie (no singing in it though) and then that was made into the one that i cant wait to see this weekend!
