algebra equation help....?
aloha everyone,
i need help with the following equation:
2x - 5y = 5
2x + 2y = 26
x = 10, y = 3
I had a similar problem before, but this has changed as there are no canceling each other out in this problem... Please help.. Please do not just tell me to substitue the variables, as i already understand that. I just need help to solve this problem. Much thanks...

There are two methods of doing this type of problem called "System of Linear Equation."
First is the substitution method, which you've mentioned. The second is the Addition method where you add the two equations together.
Start by deciding which variable is easier to cancel (opposite coefficient)
Here, it is apparent that the x is easier.
Because they are not opposite yet, we need to multiply the entire equation by a coefficient in order to do so.
So we multiply the first equation by -1 and we get:
-2x + 5y = -5 now add the other equation
2x + 2y = 26 and we will get:
0x + 7y = 21
y = 3
Now you know why we need the opposite coefficient, it is so we can cancel the variable so we can just solve for one variable.
Now substitute the y into either equation and solve for x.
2x - 5*3 = 5
2x - 15 = 5
2x = 20
x = 10
So x = 10 and y = 3
Note: if you get two equation that doesn't have the same coefficient, you can always multiply BOTH equation to get the same coefficient.
Lets say we want to cancel the y variable in our original equation.
we would need to find the common multiple (which is 10) and multiply so that we get 10.
2*(2x - 5y = 5) = 4x - 10y = 10
5*(2x + 2y = 26) = 10x +10y = 130
Now you can cancel the y and continue like above.
Notice that it is MUCH easier if you cancel out the x first.

Looks like you have a system of equations there friend!
Just subtract the bottom equation from the top, vertically if you will:
-7y = -21
y =3
Sub this value (3) for y into either equation to find the value of x
2x +2( 3 ) = 26
2x + 6 = 26
2x = 20
x = 10

you can subtract the second equation(2x+2y)=26 from the first equation(2x-5y)=5. So you get:
-7y = -21, then solve for y.
Once you have y, you can sub in and solve for x.
