What should the Singapore Govt do to increase birth rates?

Obviously our baby bonus scheme isn't working, and neither are the romancing Singapore campaigns. I hate the idea of importing foreigners to make up for the shortfall...

So what should the govt do to entice ppl to reproduce?

Update:

Yup, I agree with you...also think that the govt should entice parents to have more kids by reducing the levy for maid according to how many kids you have.

Companies should also increase days off for sick children leave, for both mums and dads. at least one week each parent just for sick leave for kids.

Any other suggestions?

Update 2:

For those who are unaware:

Right now parents get the following:

A cash gift of $3,000 each for 1st and 2nd child.

A cash gift of $6,000 each for 3rd and 4th child.

2nd to 4th children will also enjoy government contributions in the form of a dollar-for-dollar matching for the amount of savings you contribute to your child’s Children Development Account (CDA). This is a special savings account that you open at any POSB branch. You can save in the CDA any time until the day before the child’s 6th birthday. The savings will be matched up to the cap of $6,000 for the 2nd child and $12,000 each for the 3rd and 4th child.

3 months maternity leave for mum

3 days of paternity leave on the birth of your first four children. (civil servants)

5 days of unrecorded childcare leave, must be substantiated by the child's MC. (civil servants)

Maid levy reduction of $95 if you have kids under 12. (from 265 to 170).

I really dont think an increased birth rate is gonna do any good as our population in this tiny island is already jam packed as it is...the earth can't sustain any more than 6 Billion. 3 Billion would be comfortable. :)

but anyways this question is hilarious... we are actually on a record high abortion rate for teenagers. the problem is not that people can't get pregnant. the problem is that the wrong people get pregnant.

Maybe it is because all the salary men want something a little younger than their wives...unfortunately the offspring of their efforts doesn't ever become a taxpayer...lol

However the governments effort to "figure out a way" to increase birth rates is noble, but misdirected. I think that they should try to make it fashionable to have sex with one's wife and also allowing foreigners to immigrate at a level consistent with the world's advanced countries would be a start to countering the declining birthrate so i dont see why that is sucha bad idea.

Singapore’s inhabitants has more advantageous each and every three hundred and sixty 5 days to almost 25% for the duration of the last ten years - it is now close to to 5 million human beings. The inhabitants density of Singapore is now 18,350 human beings per sq. mile making it the third maximum densely populated united states interior the international. in evaluation, the U. S. has a inhabitants density of 80 3 human beings per sq. mile. If the U. S. had an identical inhabitants density as Singapore, the inhabitants will be round sixty 8 billion human beings. it truly is more advantageous than ten situations the inhabitants of the international. i'm confident i'm no longer on my own after I say the shops, parks, highways, parking parts, MRT, buses, and eating places are already way overcrowded on the weekend. Will including extra human beings advance the time-honored of lifestyles? i in basic terms can not imagine what lifestyles in Singapore will be like at the same time as the inhabitants is pushed yet another 20% from 4.987M to six.0M. the subsequent time you're waiting in a lengthy queue, or filled into the MRT, imagine about status there with one extra 20% extra human beings. it may help you pass the time

Many youngster nowaday may not aware that former PM Lee, which is current SM Lee had implemented "Two is enough" policy more than 20 years ago. Where each household can only have 2 children. As he forseem the over population in this small country. And the target was actually to set below 4 million total population. This policy had implemented for many years, not only it's affect the birth rate today, it's also affect the thinking of Singaporean having less children.

Furthermore throught out the years, when standard of living had increase tremenously, the cost of raising a baby become very high. In fact, it's come to the state that both parents must work inorder to support a family with more than 2 children. Now the problem here is who to look after the kids if both parents have to work???

The Government already made a mistake 20 yrs ago by implementing "two is enough" policy. And the policy to increase birth rate and getting more foreigners will create another problem, which is over population where SM Lee had tried to solve 20 years ago.

In short, the world highest paid Government seem helpless in this issue, they can't find a balance solution to solve aging population & over population.

I thought the two children policy was supposed to be working to keep the population down,so what is the issue here?.do you want be like the UK,become over populated?.

As one of you here has said,it is already too expensive to provide for two, getting a maid to look after while your both out working, surely more children would add to the burden?.

more baby bonus, i mean we should get equally for 1st, 2nd, 3rd baby and so on....longer maternity leave, well, do you really think 3 mth is long enuff?and give daddy longer paternity leave too, so he can help with tending to the baby, let working mothers bring their kids to work (provide childcare services for working mother) so we can be with our kids during lunch time, and lastly i think this is important for me, i don't know abt any mothers out there...but i guess the gov should provide more home based jobs for mothers, so we can work from home and at the same time take care of our kids...~~~~

    EDIT:-

Errr...floozy_niki- Yes, we do get baby bonus for our 1st baby, but it differ from 1st to 2nd, 3rd baby and so on...meaning you get more baby bonus for 2nd, 3rd baby and so on...its just that we don't get the CDA account for the 1st baby..

Sean Lawlor- i think the high abortion rates among teenage girls are a totally different issues here....i guess the govt should also do something about that...

Tan D- i totally agree with you when you said "In short, the world highest paid Government seem helpless in this issue, they can't find a balance solution to solve aging population & over population"...well said

The government is looking out on the country's economy. To remain competitive, we are sacrificing a lot of our personal life to it.

We are also part of the problem that we sacrifice long hours to work.

There should not be further maid levy. A lot of my parenting friends simply let the maid do everything of taking care of the child. A lot of opportunity for building that parent/child relationship is lost.

The government should enforce a regulation to enforce company to hire mothers as part time so that they can be with the child.

As for guys, it will be difficult to ask a company to give more off days. With Reservists obligation, a guy may already be called away for one month every year. Singaporean guys may be deem as not competitive anymore if they are gone for 3 months every year with their own leave, reservists and paternal leave.

They should let education and childcare be free-of-charge up till University level, children should get free healthcare up to age 21 with government insurance from NTUC. Baby bonus should be given from the 1st baby onwards.

Parents in Singapore pay a lot for basic necessities like milk powder and diapers. We should receive vouchers to redeem them for free or at a subsidised rate.

With more children, parents are entitled to upgrade their HDB to a bigger flat or to a condo. E.g. Only 1 child, can only buy 3 room flat. With 2 child, can buy 3 or 4 room flat and so on.

Couples with no children are not entitled to buy anything more than a 3 room flat.

Hmm, many are hard up to come to Singapore, as this does not provide security to our job. How to have a baby and when you future is not clear.

This is true as many couples are not even together as they have to work separately to pay bills.
