Comedy or drama?
To read or to see live on Broadway?
Go to your local bookstore and check out the Drama
section. You should find a ton of plays there.
Tennessee Williams is one of my favorite playrights.
Eugene O'Neill also excellent. And, of course don't forget
William Shakespeare.

I assume that since you said you don't want to hear too many songs, you would like to see a play on Broadway. So here's the list of current plays on Broadway:
A Bronx Tale (drama, one man show about the Bronx)
August: Osage County (drama, about a broken family)
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (drama, I highly recommend, doesn't open until February 12)
Come Back, Little Sheba (drama, about a struggling couple)
Is He Dead? (comedy, sounds hilarious)
November (drama, by David Mamet who's a great writer)
Rock n Roll(drama, about 1960s underground rock scene)
The 39 Steps (comedy/thriller, a whodunit spoofing Alfred Hitchcock)
The Farnsworth Invention (drama, about the invention of TV)
The Homecoming(drama, a son returning to working-class London)
The Seafarer (drama, traditional Irish play and apparently a heartwarming story)
Top Girls(drama, a businesswoman struggles to succeed in London)
I must note, I can almost guarantee none of the above are at all family-friendly. If you want to know more about the plots, google them or go to my reference. Hope you find something good!

I loved "The Pillowman" when I saw it in New York. "Rabbit Hole" is excellent too.
