How about those weathermen/women...?

What other job can you do and get paid good money for, yet be wrong 50-60% of the time. Is it just the Michigan meteorologists or is this everywhere?

Meteorologists never intentionally give the wrong forecasts, it wouldn't make any sense to do so. You will find that meteorologists are surprisingly accurate when making forecasts. The characteristics of the atmosphere allow for very sudden and very frequent changes.

It is also difficult to predict the exact time a storm will arrive. Some forecasters give a time frame only because the public demanded it and it will make them happy. The truth is, in some cases it is impossible to tell exactly when a storm will arrive.

It is true that weather forecasts are not accurate from time to time because the atmosphere is one of the most difficult things to predict. You should understand that conditions in the atmosphere are ALWAYS changing and the only way to keep up with these changes to make accurate forecasts is to have experienced meteorologists on hand as well as very reliable technology such as satellites, Doppler radar and computer models.

If a forecast called for a brief rain storm two days from now, that means that according to computer models (which gather the data from a variety of sources) predicted specific conditions to be in place for that rain storm to arrive at your area at that time. These conditions may include wind speeds and directions high in the atmosphere, location and direction of pockets of moisture, location and direction of low or high pressure systems, etc...

You see, every one of these variables will change. If the wind speeds high in the atmosphere happened to increase, that rain storm would arrive tomorrow instead of two days from now. If a high or low pressure system formed in the area, it would steer that rain storm away from you. The fact that most weather forecasts are accurate is very impressive.

Let's admit it, we are far better off having meteorologists than not.

First off they are not wrong 50 - 60% of the time

infact the NWS has a 85 - 90% success rating in there forecasts.

You need to remember that Meterology is a Sceince and most of Sceince is guessing.

When a Meterologist makes a forecast they are letting you know that from past historical Data and Modeling that the conditions are favorable (no guarntee)for the paticular weather they are telling you about. it may or may not happen just that the conditions are favorable.

Now when Severe Weather Warrnings are issued they are either happaning and have been Sighted and Reported or radar is showing signs of the condition occuring.

People need to give these Men and Women a little more credit. because I would rather have them be wrong and issue a warrning and be alive then to not issue a warning and be dead.

Source(s): I am a National Weather Service SKYWARN Spotter and work Closely with these guys so yes I am Bias. And yes it does frusterate me that they do sometimes make mistake especialy when I want to go fishing or boating But OH WELL theres allways Tommorow

Actually they are way better than they were years ago. Weather is very hard to predict accurately. Did you know it can really be raining on one side of the street and sunny on the other? Or you can drive on a highway and go in and out of rainstorms? They are more accurate on larger areas than trying to pinpoint systems, storms and such. I hope that helps.

i would say just weathermen. other jobs are more accurate do to their meaning. say, a doctor. if her/she lies 50-60% on medicine, he/she would say "here its for your cold" and maybe its for mental people. wethermen/women cant be always accurate, so they have to fibb.
