Car runs rough and shakes while idle at stop light.?

When stopping at a light the car starts to shake fairly furiously and when I come to a complete stop it shakes worse and i'm afraid it will die out or something. When it happened the first time the check engine light came on. Does anyone know what could be causing this and if you know about how much would it cost to fix?

Well...from the mom of a mechanic, always start replacing the small stuff first. For example, in your case, I had a car that did the same thing (thought the doors would shake off at the streeet light and it would die). I went to the nearest repair shop and had them check it. It was a $3.00 spark plug that was cracked. They replaced it and I was on my way. So the first thing I would check would be those spark plugs and the spark plug wires. I would also check the fuel filter and any other air filters. Good Luck

Struggling engine. To me this could be your ignition control module or main computer that is failing, this controls engine speed, idle, fuel injector on-off speed. You could have a faulty AIC valve, possibly dirty Clogged fuel filter faulty engine management system (computer) faulty pcv valve faulty fuel regulator, faulty fuel pump, check fuel pressure dirty K-N filter Wrong engine oil viscosity The codes indicate that 1 you need a new AICv valve or check connector for corrosion, or need new one. EGR selenoid sensor again check and remove the connector, sometimes just removing the connector and putting it back on solves this problem. You need a new throttle postion sensor if the signal output is low, it's defective.

the previous answer is correct for the most part...

The loose plug wires can and will cause this, if the spark plug wires are loose push them back tightly- it would be reasonable to assume the same will happen again...

A distributor cap may me dirty also, or a Coil and or coil pack- depending on car...

Check the Plug wires with engine cold and not running so you do not burn yourself or get a shock- check both ends and follow them to be sure that there is no burn marks along the way.. Wires older than 5 years should be replaced... depending on conditions of use...

could be a variety of things including intake gasket, idle air control motor/actuator, O2 sensor, low fuel pressure, manifold air pressure sensor or mass air flow sensor, the list goes on and on... best bet would probably be to take to an advanced auto or auto zone and have them pull your codes - they do it for free and find out what the code is for.... that should steer you in the right direction.. hope this helps and good luck

could be your valve cover gasket. i had that problem once. valve cov.gas was bad and leaking oil into cylinders drowning spark plugs. if this is it, you can do it yourself for like $50-$70 or take it to a mech. and pay like $400.

i had something like that once.. the spar plug wire had gone bad. could also be bad sparkplug. check to be sure the wires are on good.
