Definately - a few years ago we had a judge who always let burglars off with suspended sentences, probation etc. until his own house got done then it was a minimum of 2 years imprisonment.

No. I think that in general they follow the sentencing guidelines which are given to them. Obviously there will be the odd occasion when a sentence is too lenient, but there are also cases where a sentence is too harsh - often these are successfully appealled by the defendant, in the process costing us a great deal of time and money.
Judges know only too well that the only lesson which the vast majority of people learn in prison is how to be a better criminal, so long prison sentences should really be reserved for people who have to be removed from society for society's protection.

what has the prison system at breaking point got to do with length of sentences given
lock the criminals away for longer not shorter times
a motorist doing 31mph in a 30mph limit
gets more punishment than
burglars shop lifters muggers etc etc
who seem to only get a slap on the wrist
motorists are hounded for speeding fines parking tickets
(MONEY MONEY MONEY )
which are increased if not paid immediately
judges/magistrates will pass these fines on to bailiffs increasing them to hundreds of pounds
strip there houses of all possesions to get the MONEY
criminals will commit more crimes becoming more and more serious as they go on
especially as they are only given the proverbial SLAP: ON THE WRIST and let off
with if any fines are given getting them reduced as they have a low income DOLE MONEY
nothing to do with the FACT they make THOUSANDS from there crimes
LOCK THE B_STARDS UP LONGER
take there property from them
BUILD MORE JAILS
STOP HOUNDING THE MOTORISTS
GET THE REAL CRIMINALS & PUT THEM BEHIND BARS

Now I'm no lawyer but I'm sure these sentences are considered lenient is due to what the people are found guilty of (irrespective of what the public think). For example, if someone is drunk and kills someone whilst driving then they are not done for murder but dangerous driving which carries a much lesser sentence. Another example being killing people, you have to prove that they intended to kill them in order to get done for murder otherwise manslaughter is often the crime (which can result in a lesser sentence).
I think it's disgusting myself, but the truth is you can't just change laws immediately overnight.

Fore sure they pass lenient sentences, but then there are also far to many "doo gooders" interfering in the legal system, trying to blame everyone else except the offender for the crime !!

If you've consistently demonstated a lack of respect that fart could be the straw that breaks the camels back and you could be found in contempt of court. So yes, additional sentencing is a possibility.

Their too scared of passing heavy sentences down for fear of 'goody goodies' having ago. No they don't live in what we call the real world, they just live in their sheltered one with no reality at all.

In a lot of cases yes, I also think they should have to explain the sentences the hand out.

Its because they don't associate with a broad cross section of the community to establish public opinion, I.E down the pub, at the footy mach, at the bus stop E.T.C.

Not necessarily. Often they can't pass heavy enough sentences because the prison system is at breaking point.
