Apparently he was tired of always fighting for better facilities. He felt that the athletics department wasn't supportive enough since he was at Hawaii for 9 years and no improvements were made that he requested. For a NCAA Div. 1 school the facilities were pretty bad. One of the coaches who coach another sport for UH was asked when he traveled were there another Div. 1 program with worst facilities that Hawaii and he said no.
I'm sure June Jones didn't want to finish out his career always fighting for something that the administration wasn't going to do. Now that he's gone, the AD got fired and they are going to do the things June had asked for. Apparently Hawaii wants to bring up their level to attract a good coach and recruits. All June Jones wanted was to compete with the other WAC schools in their facilities and commitment behind the program. And he felt that it wasn't going to happen so he left. Now that he's gone, the school along with the state is bringing these issues to light and making things happen.

He's thinking that Hawaii will never be better than they were this season. So, he took a heck of a lot more money to go somewhere that his talent can be put to good use improving a bad SMU team.

hes thinking this: "this is probably the best hawaii team i will ever have and we had a great run and went undefeated and went to our first BCS game ever, since i wont inherit a better team and i cant get recruits to come here, i might as well stay on the mainland where i can actually do some recruiting."
bottom line: this is the best team hawaii will ever see with brennan and bess and rivers etc...makes sense to leave.

Hawaii can NEVER win the national championship. (scdule will always be too weak). He has had the best possible season he could have hoped for. He had to get out now or he would never had been able to "move up" in the ranks
