IE6/7 and Firefox make 91.5 % of all web users, so if it works on these three, it is usually good enough.
However, some will insist on the site to work equally well on Safari, Opera and Netscape (which make the other 8.4% users, 0.1% use unknown browsers...)
So, I test my sites on all 6...
The problem is that browsers do not repect a "standard" as such, and IE has established these by default (de facto).
First, develop on IE.
Then, correct for the others.
The general functions work fine, but when you get into complex commands, browsers respond DIFFERENTLY to the same command! So you have to follow your code and find out WHAT one does, and corret your code accordingly.
This means:
1. Get the user-agent (the browser) from the user a.s.a.p.
One trick is to have a dummy index page (blank), with just a routine to get the browser data, (and screen resolution), send it back to the server, then "redirect" to the new, real "index".
The other is to use AJAX, of course, but this is a bit more complicated.
2. Use a fair amount of "if (IE) do this, else if (FF) do that, else if (Op) do something else, else say: "your flip**g browser is crap!" "... (or another polite warning).
BEWARE also of your CSS external files: if they seem to be useful, CSS are loaded one and for all: so you cannot change parameters. I have given up these for "in-line <styles>", more reliable.
Pass on your URL, if we can see the code.
Best of luck
