Who on this forum has a RR?

I have found that while Rhodesian Ridgebacks are not extreemly rare, owners are few and far between. I think this harbors a certain comerodery with in our breed. I love asking people how did they find out about the breed and why did they go with it.

So, even if you don't have a Ridgey, what breed do you have and why did you go with that breed?

Feel free to add a picture!

Check out my boy:

I was just telling someone here yesterday how much I admire this breed. I've wanted one for years, but don't need a third breed to worry about showing right now (and, knowing me, I'd have to get one that I could show and course with). I already have Siberians and Standard Longhaired Dachshunds.

I was recently at a show in Southern CA, and the RR entry down there was huge -- I'm seeing a lot more of them at the shows than I used to, although I still see them very rarely as pets alone.

I grew up with Great Danes, and always thought I would have another one, eventually...but I think I'd rather have the Ridgeback, now.

I have an RR mixed with a Boxer. She was a rescue dog and has the looks more of a Boxer but the temperament of a Ridgeback. I actually did not know much about Ridgebacks until I got her. She was not socialized correctly and that has resulted in her having severe dog aggression, as RR's are known to have if not properly socialized. She has been an excellent dog otherwise and we have really been working on her dog aggression. She is possibly the best guard dog I have ever had and she is so gentle with children.

I think RR's are wonderful dogs, but my only caution to potential owners is to socialize early or be careful about getting an adult if you aren't ready to deal with possible aggression issues that may come with improper handling.

I LOVE Ridgebacks and think they are awesome, but I don't think they are a good breed for amateurs. Although, when raised correctly, I don't think you can get a much better dog than a Ridgeback.

Brogan is very cute! I personally don't have an RR, but there is an RR rescue about 2-3 miles away from where I live, which is kinda funny because I live in the country in a pretty small town! They have lots of RRs, large breeds, and various hounds. Here's a link to the rescue if you want to check it out:

I have dachshunds just because I fell in love with the breed. I find them to be very loyal, loving, good guard dogs, funny, and adorable. They can always put a smile on my face! Here are some pics of my girls:

One of the most intelligent and loyal and loving dogs i've ever known was a RR cross.

My friends found him wandering the streets, a year old flea infested bag of bones. "He can stay the night" her Mum said, as it was stormy. Well that night turned into his entire life!! He was so lovable, he melted their hearts. His fiersome dispostion wasnt fooling anyone. They realised after a few weeks he was mostly RR, he even had a slight ridge. We don't know what he was crossed with. We did find out he came from a dog fighting ring, and was thrown in the sea in a bag because he wouldn't fight. How he found his way to my friends family, we'll never know! Twelve years later he died a happy old man, laying in his warm bed by his master. He turned their world upside down, and it was through him they discovered RRs. They are now looking into maybe getting another. Amazing animals, I love them.

I own 2 Rhodesian Ridgebacks - Bella (desexed female) & Koda (entire male) and they are the best dogs ever, they enjoy walks along the river, swimming, lots of cuddles and sleeping under the air-con.

I decided to get RR's becasue i have an Uncle who use to own them and i fell in love with the breed - their wonderful temperament and great looks.

We chose our first Papillon because they were small but intelligent and trainable. We loved him so much my mom got a second one, and when I moved out (without either dog, they were attached to my mom) I got my own Papillon puppy. They are just the most wonderful dogs. I only know one other person who owns one, other than a few grooming clients of mine. I think there is a comraderie with any breed, however popular or rare. I would definitely like to meet more people with Paps though, they seem to especially like playing with their own kind.

There's a couple at a park I frequent with Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They're gorgeous dogs.

I got into rescue mutts as a kid - they're the closest thing I have to a "breed." I also feel a kind of camaraderie with others who have rescued mutts.

Here's my dog's Dogster - the other dog in our family is my family's dog, another rescued mutt:

it's grumpy girl. your boy is a handsome guy. i chose the ridgeback after doing research, going to dog shows, and finding a good breeder. she does conformation and shows both. she also horseback rides with her dogs. we have a mastiff also, and the same applies. we had 3 dogs {mutts} and smokey had died in dec. and honey in march. he was 12 and she was 13. with only one left, the house was empty, and we wanted to fill it again. i would also love to get a pharaoh hound, it was my 3rd choice. my girls are 6 now, but going strong. champ has since died, but she was 15, and the girls did not seem to want another dog around, so its 2 for now.

    Your dog is absolutely beautiful!

No, I don't have a RR, but they have always intrigued me. I think they are beautiful dogs, and I have yet to meet one in person, but I would really like to one day.

My favorite breed is the American Pit Bull Terrier. Despite the bad reputation, they really are loyal, loving, goofy dogs as long as they have a responsible owner.

I have the same problem with Papillons- I have 2 and almost never meet anyone with Papillons. Ironically, someone has one in my neighborhood and I just met a man today who has two. I never saw a Papillon in person until I got my own. (I only saw them on TV and read about them before).

I also have a Siberian Husky but they're pretty popular these days.
