Is it possible George Mallory & Andy Irvine summited Everest first?

The great explorer and humanitarian Sir Edmund Hillary sadly died today. He his credited with being the first to conquer Mount Everest, along with Tenzing Norgay.

Still, do you think Mallory and Irvine might have reached the 29,028 foot peak in 1924 and died on the descent?

Update:

Good point on the locals. Possibly a native of Tibet or Nepal first did the summit!

It's possible I suppose but that would still make Hillary the first person to conquer Everest and survive the attempt unless some other person did it years before but forgot to tell anyone.

uh. maybe? i still wouldnt accredit him for climbing Everest first though. there were many before him that had summited it. They're just not well documented because it was mostly natives of the area.

It's possible. Regardless, he achieved may other things in his life and was a kind, generous man who was an inspiration to many.
