The ignition switch runs around $42. It doesn't do anymore than read the key. The 'chip' in the key is basically just a resistor. the ignition switch reads it and then sends the value to your PATS box (security box). It's possible to bypass it using a $0.49 resistor from Radio shack, thats what I did on my '92 RS. You could also reprogram the new keys that come with the new switch to work with your car. Dealership should be able to program the system pretty easily.

Problem may not be the key...more likely it's a problem with the ignition cylinder or the little wires running from it have broken...common problem on those year Camaro's...best to have it diagnosed at a dealer or repair shop with the proper tools for the VATS system. Chip keys have 15 different resistor pellets so if it is a key problem, you just need to have a dealer or locksmith read your existing key chip code and cut another key to match the original key cuts using the right chip coded key blank. Call around for pricing...usually 50-75.00. Some people have found ways to bypass the chip key by installing a correct value resistor in the wiring coming from the ignition cylinder but that defeats the purpose of the anti-theft system although it is cheaper.

You can either go on ebay or to say a lock smith and pick up a key w/ the correct ohm resistor(chip) in it.
Back when I first bought my Camaro Z28. It only came w/ one set of keys and one FOB. So, I went on ebay and located seller(had a list of chips for the yr. models to match up the VIN). Who had the key blanks w/ chips for sale. Seems like it was 20 bucks or so for the both of 'em, the ignition switch(w/ the correct chip) and trunk keys.
Also, check out the 4th Gen. LT1 f-body Tech Articles link below.
Good luck!

at the dealership my key would be around 52 bucks. guy at work told me something to bypass the chip. every chip has an ohm rating. find out the ohm rating w/a multimeter. go down to an electronics store and buy a resistor of the same rating of the chip. you can put that resistor in the system to jump over where the chip would normally go. that could cut the cost from about 52 bucks down to about 52 cents.
