What to do when your boss asks you to do something dishonest?
What would you do or say if your boss asked you to do something dishonest? For example I have a request for credit info from someone on a company we have not done business with. This company does not have an account with us. But it is one of my bosses friends. He wants me to fax back the credit reference form and say they are a good customer. What would you do or say in a situation like this? By not doing it because of morals am I jeopardizing my job? Am I being petty?

Hi Deb,
That is a very serious situation. I do not think you are being petty. In today business world, your word is only as good as YOU. If you put a signature on a document, it put you liable for any given situation. CYOB - Cover Your Own Butt
If that other company gets screwed by your bosses friends company and they found out that you provided a bad reference, you could be held accountable or even fraud.
Would it ever come to that point...probably not. But in today's Lawsuit happy society, anything could happen. Even your boss could turn on you and say he knows absolutely nothing about the credit reference.
Business Ethic is big today...If your boss is unethical, is he really worth working for?
If you decide to go the high ground, no one can say anything bad about you.
Good Luck to you.

As long as he's not asking you to lie under oath or sign a legal, notarized document stating something is true when you know it's not (like on an insurance claim form), there's nothing you can really do to get around it except stick to your own inner moral compass.
Depending on how much of a harda** he is, you may or may not be jeopardizing your job.
Me -- I'd probably do it, but I would "forget" to sign the credit reference before I faxed it.

If your boss is the owner of the company, do it, it's really no big deal he's doing a favor for a friend and it's gonna be between him and you. If your boss is only a supervisor or a manager DO NOT apply your signature on that paper, let them sign it, it could easily cost you your job if it goes to higher ground.

I might fill out the form, but I'd get HIM to sign it.......since he's the boss it's only fitting. You might be jepordizing you job- depends on how flexible (or not) he is. Only you can decide what to do, but if the credit ref is a written form, fill it out, and leave it on his desk with a sticky note saying "Pls sign by the X, Thanks!" and then it will be his lie.
