How much more responsibility/jobs/etc are you given/taken on if you go into US Army basic training as a E3/E4?
A person would go in as a E3/E4 (college degree) but he/she has no prior military/army background/experience at all so could he/she handle the extra responsibility considering he/she is on the same beginning level/page as the E1's at basic training?
What extra responsibilities/jobs are you given when you go to basic as a E3 as opposed to E1?
thank you
ridin, with a college degree you automatically start off as a E3 (associates) and E4 (bachelors)
I'm asking because I don't wanna feel like I'm completely lost, since usually a person would join as a E1 and then learn and claim his up, by the time hes an E3/E4, he/she knows all the good stuff, but if a person joins as a E3/E4 right off the bat, its a different story, thanks for your answers

There is no difference during basic training.
No one wears rank during basic training.
Your all E-1's during Basic.
Your advanced rank, doesn't start, untill after basic training.
They might put you in a student leardership position during AIT, but then they might not.
At your first duty station, even if you were an E-4, they still wouldn't put you in a leadership position right away.
They would just assign you to another E-4 who out ranked you, and you would train, just like everyone else.
Most people don't realise, your real training, only starts after you graduate AIT.
You still have atleast 6 months of OJT, before you will meet the minimum qualification levels.
If you go in as an E-3, then it really doesn't matter at all.
Privates are Privates.

If you have more rank then ayone else at Basic or AIT, you are the PLT LDR. You are responsible or Squad LDR, you are responsible for were your soldiers are and what uniform they are suppose to be in and when they are suppose to be there and if they will listen to you, you must be able to learn quickly how to march your Platoon or squad if called upon by the drill SGT, if you know any ex-military, hve them give you a quick course in marching troops, and calling them to attention, and how to use your voice of authority. I would suggest using a notebook so you know the uniform, the time and the place the drill will give you all info for the next formation, or if you need to write down which soldier went on sickcall, and which buddy went with the soldier, to keep the drill informed were your soldiers are, in a sense you will be the the 1SGT and the drill is the Commander, so thats about it. You probably won't have to do kitchen duty, or details, but you may pick people to do those things and therefor eyou may not have very many friends, unless you ask for volunteers first and you can get volunteers to do it before you have to pick people for the task.

I came in with a degree, so I got E4 pay from the start. Since I chose to enlist rather than go to OCS, I don't think my Basic company/platoon paid much attention to that. I didn't feel any special leadership until AIT, where I happened to be the SPC with most time in service (due to a holdover situation after Basic) so I stood up and did squad leader time from the beginning.
I find that in training situations if you volunteer for leadership positions early, you get credit for that, and they don't expect you to know so much. They may seem like they're hard on you, but it's just because it's early. As long as you keep your head up and try to learn from your mistakes, you'll be okay. None of it is personal, unless you make it that way.

you dont get a whole lot of extra responsibilities unless you enter as an e-4 which is with your degree. I went in as a PFC and i would say probably 30-40% of my company was E-3, we had 6 people who were E-4 but normally that number is higher. The E-4's had much more responsibilities, but the PFC's didn't, the reason the SPC had more was they would be leaders not long after getting to their regular duty stations or OCS

I hope being a "Stoner" is a thing of the past. Also, didn't you think you should find this out before you got a ship date? Expect the same as other Army Recruit ( Is that what they are called, I forget, I know Marines are Recruits). Maybe physical activity will be different for you, depending of course on your physical condition. If you are very tall, you may run well in formation runs but have to take shorter strides. Also, If you are Yao Ming tall, expect some sh*t from your DS in the form of nicknames and questions, but do your best NOT to stand out, it will be easier for you.

You will definitey have a much larger chance of being selected to be a squad leader or platoon guide. Those are about the only things you have to worry about. And it's not about who has more military experience when you are in Basic. They'll put that extra responsibility on you because whatever you did to be able to come in at that rank means you must have a slightly better head on your shoulders.

Speaking as a Marine, that is jacked up that you can GO to army basic as an E-4. Even with a college degree the highest rank you can go to boot camp as is a E-2.
But then again our E-4s are in charge of infantry squads and lead 13 Marines into battle at that rank.
Wow, and the army lets them go to boot camp as an E-4, that says something.

you can go in as an PFC or SPC. i wouldnt say you have more responsibilities, but they would expect more of you. they would look at you to be the one to set the example and stuff. with more rank does come more respomsibility, but in this type of enviroment, you just have to be more of a leader within your platoon.
