I had 3 ferrets, and know what you mean. The second I would see them back into a corner, I would trot them over to their cage to do their business. Also, before I let them out, I would repeatidly place them in their "business corner" of the cage until they figured out that I would not let them out unless they at least pretended to go. They are smart critters as you know...this worked well for me. Just stick with it, place them in their corners until they figure out that peeing equals playing in the open.

You should be putting a litter pan in the spot were they are having the accidents. NOTE: You may need to have more then one litter pan outside of the cage. This alone usually solves the problem. You may need to start recognizing the signs of a ferret that has to go potty and then popping them in the litter pan yourself when they have to go. Doing this repeatedly will give them the idea. Keep in mind that no ferret is 100% in the box! Sad but true.

I recently wrote this article that I think would help you:
How To get Your Ferret to Use the Litter Box
You ferret is loyal, loves you and wants to make you happy. However, when a ferret needs to pee or poo, they can't hold on! Litter training a ferret is actually very easy - all you have to know is what their natural habits are.
First of all, you need to give your ferret access to an open litter box - don't get one with a cover!
The two best types of litter that you cab get for your ferret is clumping litter and wood chip litter, both availabe from places where you buy cat supplies. You only need to cover the bottom of the litter tray with litter, don't fill it up as you would for a cat.
If you are teaching a young ferret to be litter trained, they may paly in the litter tray, but do do worry too much about this, as when they realise what is for they will soon stop playing in it.
You are likley to need more one litter tray! You definitely need to put one inside the cage, but you will need to put other trays in strategic locations throughout the house - remember when your ferret needs to 'go', they need to 'go'! These locations need to be corners, as ferrets narurally seek out corners to do their business in.
You will know what your ferret is planning to do when he goes to a corner, because they will not walk straight up to it, but back into the corner. Ferrets do not dig a hole, or bury their messes, like cats do, so you will need to replace the litter on at least a daily basis, to keep smells at bay.
Ferrets are very intelligent and easy to train. They will learn very quickly to seek out the litter box when they need to 'go'. You will need to pick your ferret up and put him in the litter tray when you see that backing into a corner action.
You must not discipline your ferret when they mess in the wrong place, because they will see it as their relieving themsleves displeases you, not that it was bad to relieve itself in that particular spot. Discipline in this case would lead to your ferret fretting and worrying, everytime it needs pee or poo.
Another great hint in teaching your ferret use the litter tray is learning when your ferret is likely to need to 'go'. When a ferret first wakes up, they will need to relieve themselves, so while you are training him, you need to put them in the litter tray, as soon as they wake up. The next trick is to keep them there until they have relieved themselves.
As ferrets have very small digestive systems, it does not take long after eating or drinking, before it will need the litter tray. Also after a lot of excitement it may well need a litter tray, but not after just general playing.
The process of litter training your ferret will not take longer then a few days, as your ferret is a fast learner and will learn the concept of litter trays very fast.
