What would an approximate cost be to add air conditioning to a 2000 square foot house?
The house already has a forced air heating system so no new vents would need to be added.

It takes more info than just the square footage of the home. First you need to know the size of the unit. This is found through a process known as load calculation. Then you need to decide what efficiency and the added features you want in the unit because that affects the price. Then you can compare brands to find the best value. You can find all of this info at my source.

It depends on where you live and what kind of system you buy. Two years ago, I bought a new 16 SEER system made by Trane. Great system and I would buy another one. It cost me about $5K.
The Rheem is a good, basic system, no bells & whistles. It is solid and reliable but only has an efficiency of 12 SEER.
The others are higher tech and more efficient.
the most important thing to consider is teh AC company. Get a quote through Home Depot or Lowes for a baseline and then get a couple more from AC companies in your area.
Final note: I wish I had bought my system from Home Depot instead of the local company. I was not happy about the installation or follow-up service.
