Honestly it is not a good or funny name to call anyone. The word Ni**er evolved from the Spanish and Portugese "*****". This is what the Portugese and Spaniards called African slaves during the Trans Atlantic slave trade. The word is dehumanizing in the highest degree.
Africans that were made into Ni**ers were know longer considered human beings but property. Therefore the enslaver could do as they so desired to the Africans and they felt justified. One example of this is the historically documented cases of rape committed against African slave girls in their teens.
Slavemaster would frequent slave quarters at night and rape the 13, 14 and 15 year old slave girls. Sometimes this would happen to slave boys of the same age. The slavemasters would not be brought to justice for pedophilia or rape because as far as the law was concerned no crime was committed.
Words can not describe how horrible it is how through the decades many cultures within the African American community have not only embraced this word be elevated it to a term of endearment in a particular case.
For those who are not of African descent the best way I can describe the way many African Americans feel when they hear this word is for you to think of the worst thing a person could call you and then multiple that by 1000.
I hope I have shed some light on this subject and from this day forward you will consider this word an egregious stain on the face of humanity and obstain from the celebration of this word.

as every description of a thing, person or race is twisted by twisted minds, all over the world, Polity and manners demand that we respect each other, while communicating verbally, on paper or in public places.. Before you refer to ni***, let us deal with your real world. Here you may be coming across some fat person, whom you may be, in lighter moments referring them as fatty, or flesh bag or something.. . You may have heard about Americans described as Yankees, Some races are described as Red Necks , or Brownies or Yellow etc etc.. similarly African race , though part of Humanity and mostly America as well in European countries, are addressed like ni*** in bad taste by baddies and uncultured people.. Had it not been so, there would not have been Martin Luther King... Nelson Mandela and likes of him......
a boy who has no muscle power is described as skinny, or girlie...
These is usually to tease or berate the natural constitution of the Human body, and prove the superiority of the Caller...
You may have considered this as question but it is a very root cause of conflicts and wars all over the world.... Not only Black vs whites.. but even among same races themselves... The instinct of humans to prove superior to other has remained since primordial times , and this needs Tobe addressed by all educated, cultured and humane persons Globally..

Its a word from a hundred plus years ago that the black folks claimed back-some have and use it liberally and some are against it, saying it brings them down. It was a derogatory word towards a race of people, meant to bring them down when used.
Like during WW2, the Japanese were the enemy to the US and 'we' referred to them as Japs or Nips (Japan is really called Nippon) The words have roots in hatred, therefore shouldn't be used to describe someone...its just bad to keep them going, unless its used to describe a time in history and be correct.

Hello nasty taz. Back in the formative years of this G-R-E-A-T country of ours when slavery was a way of life the word was used in reference to slaves. Today African Americans/black people take offense when this word is used! It's also a reference to a time when black people were oppressed in this country which _should_ no longer be the case but...
I'm white and _I_ do NOT understand why it's acceptable for one black person to use the word "*****" while speaking to another. I'm sure someone will help me to understand that. huh!

For the record I am white. I think it's the history of the usage of the word that's the issue. I am not sure as I am white like I said, and I don't know how it feels to be called this. Maybe the word will become less offensive and lose it's power over time as it becomes more part of urban language. This couldn't be a bad thing as the word loses it's power giving less ammunition to racists. It sounds to me like you don't see this word as harmful which is a good thing to some, but not to others.

Well, let me tell you something, any racial slur will be more offensive to the race when said by another race, especially if the other race is a race that hasn't had the best history with them. But for me, truthfully, I don't care for being politically correct or race. So in the end, I don't care what you call me, as long as it has good intentions.

Yes. It is that bad. That word was used for slaves. Everything that word means is degrading. Most people associate that word with the days of separate bathrooms, eating areas, nooses, segregation. That word is used to cut someone down. Not build them up. Think about being called a snow flake or a cracker. How does that make you feel?

It is a derogatory term that has been used by white people for a long time to degrade black people. Black people use the term amongst themselves almost to take away the power that it has. But to be honest, we would be better off as a nation if the word wasn't being used by anyone, black or white. You definitely shouldn't feel the need to use regardless of who you are.

A lot of what is offensive and not offensive has to do with people's egos or lack thereof of the person who is reacting to the word. A person who has high self-esteem would not be offended by the word. They would simply consider the source of who is saying it and ignore it.

it all relates back to when there were slaves and black people were done very unfairly hundreds of years ago. they were treated like animals and called that name or "boy" because white people back then thought they were less of a human.
But what I don't like is how they get away with calling eachother that, it shouldn't be said at all. I just wish the past would stay in the past and we all move toward the future and stop hating eachother...
