Illegal immigration and the election?

According to polls a large majority of the people in the US are against amnesty.

McCain, Huckabee and the dems are doing well in the polls even though they support amnesty.

How can people who are against amnesty support candidates who have long histories of supporting amnesty for the 12-20 million illegals who are in the US?

Update:

Mitt and Fred are the only candidates who oppose amnesty for the illegals. Why aren't they getting more support from the voters?

Update 2:

I know the president isnt the one to make legislation, but what he does can be vital to stop amnesty. We have a democrat led senate and house. There are enough dems and liberal republicans in those bodies to pass amnesty legislation. A president who is against amnesty can veto the bill when it gets to his desk.

With the majority of the house and senate being for amnesty our only hope is to have a president who is AGAINST amnesty in any form.

Update 3:

The only candidates who are against amnesty are Mitt and Fred. Well, Duncan Hunter is against it but he is so low in the polls I don't really count him.

Update 4:

I know my senators don't care what the voters think. They vote like they want to because they count on us having short memories. McCain is a perfect example of voting for and authoring a bill that supports amnesty even though the legal people in his state oppose it by large #s.

We have also seen most of the primaries so far have been in liberal states. once they get away from that these candidates are screwed.

Luckily for those that don't support amnesty, the president isn't the only one with a say in it. That's why we have checks and balances. It's difficult to find a candidate that agrees with all of one's own opinions, so it's important to rally support and press members of congress to act for their constituencies. And now is the age of the internet, in which rallying support has become much easier. If there are that many people who don't support amnesty, a petition should be easy to complete. I guess the difficult question is whether or not you believe that your congress-person would actually act for their constituency if their voice was strong.

In response to your "additional details" - You're right. I'm a dreamer. Sometimes I like to think that our democratic system actually works. And you're right about the veto, unless the congress managed to hear and follow the will of the people and overrode the veto... wait, there I go dreaming again.

These people are going well in the polls because voters are not voting on single issues, but the candidate's overall views. If everyone voted "single issue" in the primaries this year, then Ron Paul might actually be a candidate to contend with in November. (I am not a Ron Paul supporter.)

On single issues, (like amnesty for illegals), I would never vote for McCain, but overall I would consider him. At this point in time though, McCain won't get my vote either. However, if he becomes the Republican nominee in November, he will get my vote then.

Because we don't have any electable good choices on this important issue. All the corporate money have supported illegal immigration, and both parties have the deck stacked against us. Its time for us to develop a third party that truly represents our views, end the war in Iraq, stop allowing outsourcing to destroy all our jobs, and close the border to countries with serious overpopulation problems.

    I say :

Don't let the illegal immigrants vote.

    That'll teach them.
