My '06 Suzuki's exhaust pipe has turned gold. Whats going on?

When I bought the bike the whole exhaust pipe was crome and shinny. The day after I bought it I noticed that where it comes out of the engine and turns down to go to the rear of the bike it turned gold and right after riding there are spots that look purple but go away after cooling off.I have seen pictures of other peoples s40's and I have seen the same thing happening. Is this a faulty pipe that I need to get fixed before it breaks or is it just something that will go away when I clean it? Again it is an '06 Suzuki S40 which is the 650cc engine. It has around 2,500 miles on it. Thanks in advance for any answers from first hand experience.

Update:

Follow up question: since there is physically nothing wrong with the pipe is there a way to clean it to get that reaction off of the pipe or is a new pipe the only way to fix the cosmetics?

This is normal. The heat of the exhaust will turn the chrome blue. Just keep on enjoying the ride. If you polish it it will go back to the shinny chrome finish. Keep in mind that repeated polishing will eventually wear through the chrome. In some instances, if the bike is not running right this could indicate that you need to adjust the carb. But most of the time it is just normal.

Yeah, do NOT sit bags on the exhaust pipes. You'll ruin the bags and the pipes very quickly. I would think that Suzuki makes bolt-on bags for the M50, but my experience with bolt-on bags is that they're too small to be of much help carrying things. Find some over\under seat bags that are about 12 inches long and 8 inches tall, with adjustment straps or holes in the middle. These bags will carry most anything, and won't look too big for your bike. With a little work, you can get them to fit under the seat. You'll need the saddlebag support brackets for them. Try your local shop or JC Whitney. Beware of buying saddlebags on line. Many times they don't look the same when they arrive. Try to keep the bags at least 2-3 inches away from your exhaust pipes.

The heat from the exhaust has done this, totally normal. The very high heat actually caused a chemical reaction in the chrome, it is in no way compromised, bad or in need of any replacement.. Don't worry about it.

blueing of the pipes is normal but sometimes the carb couls be running lean. lean carbs causes raw gas to get away and this could be the reason for the pipes to turn color

Source(s): the front pipe on my 73 sporty turnd blue when i run it.

if u didnt remap the ecm, u are running too lean. that will blue pipes in a hurry. if the mix is right, then there's nothing that can be done unless u add heat sheilds.

some of the color change is norm. but if your pipes are turning gold your running lean if it running rich they will turn blue

the previous answer nailed it. the only thing is looks. you can buy aftermarket with guarantees's against bluing. plus they are louder, and will offer a bit more performance.
