No, public toilets in NYC are an awful idea. They would be disgusting after about 3 hours.

If you need to use a bathroom in Manhattan, you will always find on in a McDonalds, and you'll always find a McDonalds within blocks of anywhere you are. And they are almost always clean.

Actually, they tried this experiment in 1992, but the advocates for the disabled squashed it because there were separate toilets that were wheelchair accessible.

It seems like these toilets will be clean and safe. It's definitely necessary. I'll never forget going for interviews in Manhattan a very long time ago. I went into a Burger King to use a bathroom, and it was so filthy I walked out. I then went to the Empire State Building where a security guard took pity on me and gave me a key to a restroom there.

Kim--from what I've read, these toilets are self-cleaning after every use.

If they're like the ones I've seen in San Francisco when I visited once, and I think they are almost exactly the same, then I don't see any cons at all.

They're clean, they're actually fun (I know it sounds weird, but you go try it for yourself), and they're convenient.

The only con is in the rare case that you need more than 15 minutes; at least they warn you three minutes before the door opens automatically. However, this is a necessary feature; don't want people locking themselves in there for the night and making it a hangout.

They are indeed self-cleaning, and it works very well. I know it's hard to believe, but all I can say is go ahead and see for yourself. They really do work as advertised. Great idea.

Pro: Women could actually go as frequently as men do. Fewer men might go in public

Con: The owner will be unlikely to keep it clean and it will reek like the bathroom in Starbucks.

I know they are supposed to be automatic cleaning. But that won't last long. Especially when that feature gets disabled so people can live in them.
