New York City native. Love my town! Food & wine are a priority. Music & Film. Trivia & History. Fun & Helping others. Pick a pair! (FYI - I do not work for or get anything from Time Out NY. But it does happen to be a good resource so it pops up from time to time in my answers.)

  • NYC - Where to watch HBO's True Blood on big screen?

I used to go to the Tribeca Grand Hotel to watch True Blood in a theater on the big screen.

Now, just in time for the season finale, they have decided not to do it anymore!

Where can I go with friends tonight to see the finale on a big screen? I'm considering Prof. Thom's but I've never been there and am worried it will be crowded and loud and I won't be able to hear the show.

  • Are there any Glee viewing parties in NYC?

I attended a small one at Nevada Smith's last week, but I don't think they are returning this week.

There must be one somewhere in Manhattan, right?

    Thanks

  • What is an excellent site for identifying film locations?

I just saw the Bourne Ultimatum. At the end of the film, Pamela tells Bourne to meet her using the code "415 71". The street signs in the scene show the corner of 71st Street and York Avenue and a unique gray building with large numbers reading "415". But somehow I doubt this is accurate - aside from the fact that this is the "500" block. I'm a NYC native and am pretty sure that when I go to that corner Pamela Landry's building won't be there. They may have covered the signs with different info (for some unknown reason).

I Google-mapped, etc., etc. But no clear answers.

So that raised a question - Is there a very good site that tells you accurate information about film scene locations?

  • Blank body on Yahoo emails that I send out.?

For the past month or so I have been getting complaints from people that the emails I send out from my Yahoo account contain - nothing. They are blank except for the subject line.

It doesn't happen every time, but it always seems to happen on important stuff!

I notice that some emails I send to myself are blank.

I also notice that when I try to reply or forward a message, the body and subject are often not there and I have to cut and paste them in.

What gives? How to fix? Thanks

  • Does anyone know a way to get Vindigo to work?

The company went down slowly from Sept 2008- January 2009. But I was able to continue to synch and use Vindigo for a long time.

Now it won't even let me use it on my Palm, saying that I need to synch again. Of course I can not synch anymore.

    Any work-around or other advice?

    Thanks

  • Best place to buy cigars in NYC?

I'm going to a cigar bar tonight. I'm tired of getting ripped off at these places so I'd like to bring my own. Where should I go?

I do not need to go to the trendiest place. But I am looking for quality and value.

Lower Manhattan (below 23rd St.) or Downtown Brooklyn work best for me.

    Thanks!

  • How to get free life jackets/pfd's for non-profit kayak club?

I was just thinking about this and thought I'd run it by the group.

I am involved with a free kayaking program that does a lot of work with schools, local community groups, etc. They get a little money through voluntary donations here and there but basically they are broke. This is reflected in the dirty/battered life-jackets they provide to people who come down for a paddle. The PFDs still work well, but yuck!

It seems to me that there should be some way that a company that sells or makes life vests could get good PR out of donating a new supply of PFDs to a program like this. But I would not know where to start in order to make that happen.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!!!

  • Should I keep this wine refrigerator?

Should I keep this wine refrigerator?

I just bought an Oster 12 bottle wine "cellar" on Ebay for $50. It was listed as "new". When it came it was all banged up & the drip tray was cracked to the point that it won't be useful. But it was 1/2 the retail price. My first thought was to send it back. But what a hassle! So my question is what do you think? Are the problems with this unit inconsequential? Or are they serious enuf that I shouldn't mess with this thing?

It is dented @ the top left rear metal cage, behind the electrical elements. And it's also kicked in at the bottom. As I said, the drip tray is badly cracked.

So what do you think? Spend the $ to send it back? I think the seller will reimburse me 1/2 of that if he keeps his word. But he hasn't returned any of my emails in a long time - even tho he asked me to email him photos of the damage.

Most importantly, is this thing a safety hazard?

It's hot & my wines are in need of shelter. What do you think? Get another one? Or "Just Chill"?

  • Good Karaoke Room Spot for Birthday in NYC?

A friend of mine wants me to put together a Karaoke Party for her. We want a private living room type of space rather than a required public spectacle.

I know of several places but have to admit that I have only been to 2 recently - Sing Sing on Ave A and BINY near the Holland Tunnel.

I already looked on CitySearch and Sing Sing got BAD reviews for the conditions of the private rooms. I already know the service is bad from being in the bar area last week, so I wasn't surprised by that. But "nasty" is not an option.

One thing I like about BINY is that they charge you a particular rate for the room, but they subtract from that bill anything that you spend on food and drink. It's just not in a convenient place for the people who will be attending. Besides, I want to know my other options.

All I see on Citysearch is stories about overcharging, run-down/dirty private rooms, and surly service. Anyone know of a consistently good spot?

  • I wanna buy clothes that I see on Soap Operas - How?

I often see characters on soap operas who are wearing interesting clothing and jewelry.

How can you find out who the designers are? Or how to purchase the clothes.

They never repeat outfits, so I figure the stuff gets sold somewhere.

I think All My Children used to have a store on their official web site. But now I can't find it. On that show I particularly like the wardrobes for Crystal and Kendall.

Even just knowing who made the clothes would be helpful.

  • Good Salon in Chinatown for haircut?

My girlfriend's 8 year-old daughter needs a haircut and is on her way to Chinatown right now. But the usual salon is closed today, so she is looking for a recommendation.

She is Indian and only speaks English so reasonable communication in English would be nice.

The little girl especially wants to get a zigzag cut (like the pattern on Charlie Brown's shirt) like the one she recently got in Hong Kong.

    Any help is appreciated.

The salon has to be in NYC Chinatown.

    Thanks

  • My Yahoo address is getting spoofed bounce-backs. How do I stop this?

Today I found myself with more that 500 bounce-back e-mails in my Yahoo account. I have set up a filter to send most of them into a separate folder, Just In Case.

But this is bogus. How do I stop this? I am obviously being spoofed. From what I can tell it is through my web page. I set up my web page through Yahoo. The e-mail connected with the page is this account, although it would actually be typed out with the domain name of the web page. That is why I trace it back to my page. The messages reference that domain, not Yahoo.

    1) How to do I stop it?

    2) How do I report it?

Yahoo's "Help" pages do not address spoofing at all. As a matter of fact a search for the term comes up empty. So I need your help.

    Thanks

  • Need a piano bar/cabaret-type spot for about 20 frustrated singers to have a blast on a Sunday Afternoon?

I have been given the task of organizing an event for a group of about 20 singers to have a get-together in Manhattan. Most of us are native New Yorkers, but many in the group don't do much in midtown or downtown. So it's up to me to find a spot where we can do sing-alongs AND eat.

We are not trying to break the bank so I know that I may have to settle for eating first and then rolling on over to a piano bar, and that's fine.

I am pretty savvy about the city but my brain is just not clicking on this one. So yes, I am aware of the Duplex, but it is too small. Brandy's is small and not in an interesting neighborhood (though there's an Irish pub with good burgers nearby).

Not interested in chi chi places like the Algonquin. And I want the possibility of musical interaction (open mic / singing along) so a spot like the Monkey Bar is out.

So I am turning to you all to help me out here.

    THANKS
