The difference between store knit yarn and home knit yarns?
I've noticed something with yarns. Has anyone else noticed how a knitted sweater from a clothing store will be made with nice, tight, smaller yarn, which is really smooth, but yarn you buy from a store to make a sweater is, even, if it's smaller, really, well, fuzzy and not tight.
Why is this and where could I get some more proffessional looking yarn?
Thanks!

It's both the yarn and the knitter. It's possible to knit tight fine gauge sweaters by hand, but it takes a lot of experience to get it perfectly even and it takes alot of patience because it would use really fine yarn and small needles. I've taken apart LOTS of department store sweaters for their yarn (it's really cheap at the Salvation Army) and have noticed that the yarn use is not made the same as yarnstore yarn. Commercial sweaters are made of lots of fine yarns and if they want a thicker garment but the same color, they just add a couple of strands, they aren't even plied together, they just smoothe out when knitted.

The clothing store sweater is made on a knitting machine and then cut into the pattern it will be made into. If you have an old swearer and you try to take it apart to use the material you will find the thread is only the length of the width of the sweater. The yarn they usually use is called sports yarn and is 3 ply as opposed to what I would use and is 4 ply. The yarn should not be fuzzy unless you are getting an off brand. and the tightness is how much pull is used when making the sweater. Try using the more popular brands.

Most store bought sweaters are made on knitting machines and sewn together after construction. If you had a knitting machine, you would have to use fine yarn. When you knit a sweater by hand , you can use fine yarn and small needles but it takes a longer time to make. Some of the fairisle patterns call for finer yarn.
Here is a link so you can see the difference.

That is because in the stores there are usually worsted weight yarns, and store-bought knits usually knit with fingering or lace weight. YOu might try looking on sock yarns, some of them are tightly spoon. Most of the people wouldn't dare knitting a sweater with very thin yarn because it is so much more work! That is why it is harder to find thin yarn there. You might want to check for thinner yarns online. When you will look for yarn, pay attention to how many strands or plies are in the yarn, and how much they are twisted. One or two and not twisted - means soft, ten and tightly spun - and you get undestructable bullet proof sweater :) Also, the kind of yarn you are using is important - alpaca, angora mohair would be fuzzy no matter what, and silk would be sleek with no fuzz.

I don't think it's the yarn either. Rather the sweaters bought in a store are probably made by machine rather then a person sitting there knitting for days on end.

its not the yarn it more of the talent of the knitter and how the sweater is put together as well as little details that make all the difference.
