Q For New York City residents?

yes and no, depending on tourist site. times square? generally I try and avoid it as there is nothing there that appeals to me. I do pass by sometimes especially if i have to walk up broadway, and don't feel like detouring to ninth ave just to get uptown.

the south street seaport. i avoid it, nothing there, nothing to see there for me, i don't work in the area.

rockefeller center, i try and avoid it especially during the holidays when you can't walk because of the massive crowds.

I don't mind the tourists, most of them are nice. the people i go out of my way to try and avoid are assholes mowing everybody down on the sidewalk in their mad rush toward penn station in order to get trains out to their asshole little houses on long island and jersey. or the assholes working on wall street who like to get on the 4 train, try and sit down in that 2 inch space next to you, and push you out of your seat (why they don't jump out of their office windows i don't know).

living in nyc does wear you down, but there are always way to regenerate and revive.

I go to Times Square (which I still think of at the "Theater District") when I go to the theater. Or I have shopped at that big Toys R Us on Times Square, just because they have everything, and I have two kids (though I haven't done that in a few years now.)

I have not been to the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty since I was a kid. But there are other tourist sites I go to regularly. The Metropolitan Museum. Rockefeller Center. These are great places, and worthy of many, many visits.

I DON'T always like having all the tourists around. But I sort of do, too. Yes, it's annoyingly crowded, and that's particularly annoying when the crowd is a crowd of tourists, who don't know how to move like New Yorkers do. I always feel like the tourists walk WAY too slowly, and I can't get anywhere!

On the other hand, I'm proud of my City, and happy to see that so many people want to come here. So, in that sense, I'm glad to see all of you!

And, I'm always happy to give directions. Just ask.

LOL let me tell you that MOST New Yorkers do not go to these places because they are so annoying. I've never been on top the WTC (such a regret), Empire State Building, and the Statue of Liberty. The statue was awesome until they closed it off. Everywhere you walk you see people going WoW! WoW! WoW! WoW! and block the busy narrow street. Us New Yorkers walk like we have fire on our butts. For me, the reason why I go out to Manhattan is only to eat at a fancy restaurant. Museums are good to go to with a bunch of friends and visit new exhibits. Also most NY natives don't live in a tourist town. We live in the outerlying boroughs: Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and THE Bronx. Once we cross the East River or Harlem River it becomes tourist town. The outer borough are different. Stop by one day and DON'T end up in the wrong neighborhood. Only Yuppies and out of towners live in Manhattan, namely Upper East Side.

My heart sinks every time I know I have to go anywhere near Times Square. I'd rather go to the dentist.

To us this is home, not Jungle Habitat. So we are focused on going about our lives and daily tasks. If your daily tasks are in Times Square - well, I hope you meditate.

We tend to only do the touristy things when our out-of-town friends visit. I admit that is unfortunate. But we take it for granted and there are usually such lines and high prices for the tourist things that are offered here. "It will always be there" so we wait. Glad a friend got me to go to the World Trade Center observation deck.

Aside from that, most of us went to some of these things with our school groups years ago. And that was it.

It depends on the occasion. I could sometimes go to Times Square when I either have a job interview in the area, or I'm going to see a movie there. Otherwise, I leave Times Square for the tourist.

Holy crap, I really try to remember that they're tourists and the like, but I work at Rock Center and there are days when I just want to kick them in the shins or something. I avoid Times Square as if it were the plague and go there if there's some movie playing at the AMC or Loews that my coworkers and I want to go to after work (or for chicken rice bowl; something about that rice bowl from Yoshinoya, but if I go, I cut up to 8th from 48th street, then walk downtown to Yosh).

But, to be honest, I travel often and I'm a tourist in other towns. I want people to treat me with kindness when I'm in a different city, so I try to do the same when tourists ask me for directions. (Note that the operative wod is "try.")

My job brings me to Times Square every day.

Other than that, I've gone there for getting some interesting night photos when I was a photography student in community college, sometimes on a date with someone that moved to the area recently and wanted to go, or once I was bored and I figured I'd go there and watch all the tourists say and do silly things.

NYC isn't a tourist town. It makes more on parking tickets than probably all the tourists in town. Now I live in Orlando FL, and this a tourist town, If it wasn't for the attractions, Orlando would fold up like Omar's tent.

Actually I have never been to any of the tourist sites in NYC!

But I love Manhattan. It is just our home. I don't enjoy the crowds on Times Square.

Well...New York is big...Someone can live in Staten Island and it could be a huge thing for them to go to Times Square. But for most people, no we don't visit tourism places on a regular basis. Only once in a while.

i think it's because, historically, NEW YORK CITY is what people from other countries usually associate with when they think of the United States... and, how it's practically a city made up of people from other countries, religions, and other walks of life, any disaster set in that city gets a kindred type of reaction from a lot of people around the world... subconsciencely (?), it's like that disaster, be it Godzilla or aliens, is attacking "the world" and not just "an american city"...
