I believe the program that you are referring to is OpenOffice.org which is an entire office suit including programs like Writer (Word) Math (Excel) and more. It can be found at http://www.openoffice.org./ If this is not what you are referring to then there is also AbiWord which is a free word processor but does not include the other office programs: http://www.abiword.com./ I hope these help.

If you're thinking of a Microsoft Product then I'd say Microsoft WordPad.
It doesn't, by default, show Word documents in the File-Open diaglogue but if you change the .RTF to .DOC it will open them for you.
Look under the Accessories tab.

You might be thinking of the Writer program in the Open Office suite of products.

the free equivalent to msoffice is openoffice.
you have to install the whole office suite to get word
