A 'Hindu' takes oath on "GEETA" While considers "VEDA" as his most sacred and ancient 'Epic'; Why ?

It looks surprising that having so many religious books like 'Veda', 'Upanishada', 'Purana' or even "Ramayana" ; more ancient than the 'Geeta'; 'The Geeta' is considered the 'Dharma Grantha' of 'Hindu'. Why?

If some one can throw light on this please ?

Bhagavad Gita... the Sacred Bhagavad Gita is a very sublime document without a parallel in mankind! The doctrine of Bhagavad Gita was preached by Lord Krishna to Arjuna in the battlefield of Mahabharata. The doctrine of Bhagavad Gita entails everything for the common man to reach the highest nobles in life... the stage of an enlightened one!

Follower of Bhagavad Gita finally gains the level of Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed! Having gained enlightenment one finally takes salvation (moksha)... liberation from the cycle of birth and death forever! Having emancipated forever from the vicious cycle of birth and death... the liberated soul atman gains entry into the kingdom of God (aka Baikuntha in Hinduism)!

The teachings of Bhagavad Gita can only be learnt by one who follows the path of absolute truthfulness... the prime reason why the Sacred Bhagavad Gita is considered sacred while taking oath in various courts of India. Vedas on the contrary are voluminous in nature. The four Vedas... the Rig Veda... the Sama Veda... the Yajur Veda and the Atharva Veda are four independent treatises that are considered direct dictates from God Almighty.

Vedas define the various principles of life... they deal with every conceivable subject possible! Vedas have in them treatises on materialistic subjects also... the prime reason why Vedas are not considered suitable for taking oath! Vedas though directly emanated from God Almighty... deal with physical manifest attributes of life also. On the contrary, Bhagavad Gita purely talks of spiritual network that exists within every living being.

For gaining enlightenment one need only gain the Wisdom contained in Bhagavad Gita! A simple English translation of Bhagavad Gita is available from Gita press, Gorakhpur, India for a mere sum of $.40 still, most human beings living on Mother Earth are unable to comprehend the contents therein! Bhagavad Gita is not to be studied literally... we need to dive deep to gather the pearls of wisdom imparted by Lord Krishna.

Upanishads are independent treatises by enlightened Saints of various eras! They may or may not contain subjects related to the physical manifest world! Whatever is contained in every Upanishads is also contained in Bhagavad Gita but not vice versa. Similarly the essence of all the four Vedas is contained in the Sacred Bhagavad Gita! Beyond Bhagavad Gita there is nothing to be learnt by human beings! Bhagavad Gita is the end of all!

Puranas are historical treatises that depict various inlaid stories related to mythology and gods and deities of different regions. Ramayana is sort of a historical novel related to the life of maryada Purushotham Rama! Ramayana entails how human beings can reach the level of Rama... the highest manifest stage in the physical manifested life! No human being can ever reach beyond maryada Purushotham Rama as a physical being. More on Bhagavad Gita - http://www.godrealized.com/bhagvadgita.html

According to Judaism YHVH was only spoken inside the inner chamber by the high priest. Many cultures at that time kept the name of their God sacred & didn't pronoun it except for special occassions. I've never heard anything about being put to death. That sounds like a good addition of urban legion. There is no real debate about virgin. The Torah uses a different word elsewhere when virgin is meant. It's hopeful thinking that almah meant both. A young woman could (happen to obviously, as could an old one) be a virign, but if that was important to the context, Betulah (spelling?) would have been used. Almah just meant young woman & some Chrisitian versions of OT are changing to accomodate that correction. Jehovah is a obvious invention in that J isn't in Hebrew. W isn't either & got added by German translation where W is pronounced V. There was addition of vowel dageshes (sounds) added to the four letters YHVH BUT they were the ones for adonai, to remind people to subtitute pronounciation. I don't know the timing of when those were added. ========== I've seen very, very recently a mixing up of Jehovah with Yeshua, i.e. Jesus. That's just people not realizing that they are different words from different sources, even though they have somewhat similar sounds. Jehovah is a German word for God then translated into English years ago. Yeshua is an attempt to switch from Jesus in Greek to Hebrew, used to make people more happy in the last few years religiously. ============== I was just watching a show on PBS tonight that cites tons of archeological evidence of the Israelites. The big "debate" in the middle was the size & timing of the House of David. Through a few different archeological finds, including a Syrian one, they pinpoint it to the time specified in the Bible. This timing mattered because it put the large kingdom style findings with David thereby proving that indeed there was one large Israel at one time, & not just a bunch of tribes. The show wasn't that complementary altogether, so it wasn't leaning over to prove anything here.

Veda is for advanced people you need huge understanding, spiritual practise to understand it.

so normal people can only understand it with some spiritual teacher.

but Geeta can be understood by all without any person.

its better to understand it under some guidance but its not must

so geeta became more popular than Vedas

and in Ramayana there is only story or can say understanding via story and Vedas contains only knowledge.

but Geeta is connected with a event and contains knowledge also .

and total translation of Geeta is possible not for Vedas

You need knowledge of Sanskrit to study on Veda.

Veda isn't really not book, its from that when writing isn't discovered.its completed by so many rishis one to another.

Like guru to student by chanting

Veda is not an epic, its a Dharma granth. Geetha is also a Dharma Granth. The reason why Geetha became so important is simple. It came from the mouth of Lord Krishna himself. It was easier to understand and simpler to follow. Over and above, it was like a compressed form of the Vedas and Upanishads.

Your question reminds me of one of the Sayings of Kanchi Pujyasri Mahaswami, Chandrashekarendra Saraswathi Ji.

He Says, Geetha as te Brother Of Diwali. The reason he says is, Both Diwali and Geetha came out in not a very good time. (Geetha came in the war field. South indians celebrate Diwali over the deathbed wish of Narakasur.) But still both of them became really famous. There are many other greater books, still Geetha became popular.

Vedas consist of all the knowledge in this world but as law is an in-different part of society yet the most important similarly Geeta forms the ethical basis for living and doing (karma)

As we have to take an oath regarding our doings (karmas) So it is but Geeta which used to take an oath etc for the sake of swearing on the epic of Karma , your deeds.

    Hope the answer satisfies.

Bhagwat Gita is the holy book of authority for the Hindus meaning ‘Song of Divine’. It was written some 5000 years ago by Rishi Vyas and it is believed and practiced by Indians by heart. It is given the status of 'Shruti' as it contains the essence of the Upanishadic teachings of the Vedas. Moreover, it is widely circulated, more popular and frquently read Holy book.

Gita is the essence of Vedas and Upanishads.

    So Gita represents Hinduism.

But as Indians we should take oath on constitution or Flag.

Krishna's teachings in the Bhagavd-gita contains the essence of all that is in all vedas and upanishads.

An oath on Gita is an oath taken on all available different scriptures .It is not possible to take an oath on too many books .So people perfer to take oath on the abstracts of all the vedic scriptures contined in Bhagavad-Gita

    Thanks for this beautiful question

In fact Geeta is not just a simple book... it is an extract of vedas, upanishadas and other sacred scriptures.

If we understand Geeta, we understand the gist of Santan Dharma and its real teachings

They are all inspired works from the gods. Just like one chooses their path to God in Hinduism, one can find a holy book that fits them the best.

Hinduism understands that people are different with different needs to reach God.
