Why is there such a battle of the bulge in tennis right now?

There are so many overweight, out-of-shape, or big-bellied tennis players that even commentators on the Australian Open have been joking about spare tires, fraternity brothers drinking beer, sorority sisters, back problems (or front problems), and broken furniture. You would think that with all their training, top players like Baghdatis, Nalbandian, and very many of the female players would be in shape. Is this a diet thing? A sign of the times? A lack of off-season training?

I tend to agree with you. I was watching the Open last night, and Svetlana is out of shape for a tennis star. She is a power hitter, and that helps her out a great deal. Federer, Roddick, I think are in great shape. When the Williams sisters are at the top of their game, the shape they are in matters. Serena is thick, and Venus is slender, they both have advantages over their opponents. As a whole, tennis players are usually thin and quick on their feet.

I was discussing this while watching Molik playing Eanepi (the estonian woman) with a friend. The estonian was quite pudgy and had a belly. My friend pointed out that the 'greyhound' players are a thing of the past because you need to be a heavier set to compete with the power players. Look at Venus Williams game with Zi Yan tonight. The Chinese player was tiny and just couldn't compete with the taller and heavier Venus.

Sure some of them do get out of shape, but the Williams' sisters play pretty well fat or slimmer. So does Davenport (she was heavy a few years back but still won).

The men are the same. These people aren't sprinters after all and if they can play 3 - 5 hours and not collapse then they have to be pretty fit.

BTW a recent study has found that slightly pudgier people who are fit are actually healthier than skinny people. Can't remember the name of it so no reference.

I agree with you. I strongly believe it is lack of dedication and

off-season training. For example, Baghdatis has become

such a famous name in Greece/Cyprus, that they have been

making so many documentaries about him. Even he admitted

that he thinks to be in good shape, but could very well see that

he was having problems with hamstring in his calf muscle.

When the money shows easy way and there is a slight chance

in a players mind, then probably this leads to have easy life.

Some players are out of shape due to injury and timings of

the game. A long lay-over without gym and physical fitness

can build this sort of bulge and tend to become un-athletic.

But there are some even women players like Bartoli, Kuznetsova and many others, I think they are born with it.

Yeah, I noticed how Nalbandian looked a bit chunky yesterday. I don't know if he's fat, or just sporting big muscles. Either way, he probably weighs too much to be a good tennis player right now.
