Co-signing a car loan??

I'm getting a new car in a few weeks. My dad has a credit score in the 800s..mine is in the mid 600s. Ideally I'd like to put the loan in his name with me as the co-signer, but would most banks be willing to do this seeing as that he obviously doesn't need a co-signer. I could probably get a decent rate (I have a good county government job and any old college debts have been paid) but my dad could get a much lower one than I could. What do you think America??

Update:

By mid 600's I mean 650-670 range. I've been at my job for a year.

Update 2:

My current car is in my dad's name and I've never missed or been late on a payment. So don't give that crap that my dad would be crazy to do it. He doesn't mind.

Of course have your dad co-sign if you can get a lower rate from the bank. Since you seem to be good on payments and you should not worry about lowering your dad's credit. If both of your names are on the loan, both of your credit scores can go up if you pay the bills on time. A lot of first time buyers do this to get their payments lower and getting their credit scores up. Just make sure you dont screw up your dad's credit score by not paying the bills.

You're screwed. The judge should have ordered the truck sold as part of the divorce. You cannot have yourself removed since you are an equal owner in both the truck and the responsibility by signing on the loan in the first place. The lender has all the legal rights in the world to come after you because that is what you agreed to by signing the contract for the truck in the first place. You need to contact an attorney that will take you both back to court to order him to sell the truck and pay off the lender plus all late fees. As far as the late payments that are already there your credit is also screwed for the next 7 years. If he declares bankruptcy that truck cannot be included because it is a joint loan. Unless you file with him he and you will still owe on that truck. Never co-sign anything with anyone.

I agree with Brian A. the only way to get your credit rating higher is to have the loan in your name...making sure that you pay on time every month and until it's paid in full. No need to have dad co-sign, it won't do anything other then get you a lower rate of interest.

  • Get it solely in your name on the loan. This will help build your credit much faster. And that will help YOU on down the road when you are ready to take out a loan on something else. The better your credit score is, the higher the chance of getting a great interest rate. Having it only in your name will benefit you greatly if you keep up with your payments.

If you get it in his name with you as a cosigner, it will help his credit much more than it will yours.

What would be the point in adding you as the co-signer? Bite the bullet, get your own loan, and your credit will be much better next time. Being co-signer on the loan will do NOTHING for your credit.

I think you should stand up and be your own person by securing the loan on your own. It would not be fair for your dad to become responsible for the payments if something happened to your job.

    Take out the loan yourself.

Why would your dad be willing to screw up his credit rating by doing this?

Like Pedro says, he'd be stupid to do it. SORRY, I know you didn't want to hear this, but it's true.
