Wellbutrin is a prescription medication. It is usually started at a low dose and increased gradually. It's the only antidepressant that seems to cause slight weight loss (some of these meds tend to lead to weight gain in most people). It is "activating" to many people (can hype you up some), so it's best not to take it in the evening; it might keep you up all night. Some people complain of vivid or weird dreams while taking it.

Many people have been successful with quitting smoking while using Wellbutrin (my boyfriend did). Besides depression and smoking, it can also be used to treat adult ADD. You should not take it if you have a history of seizures or bulimia.

It comes in name brand and generic (bupropion) and extended- and immediate-release versions. Many insurances only want to pay for the generic (cheaper), but in my experience the extended release works better. Again, the extended release may not be a good idea late in the day because it may keep you awake.

    How should I take Wellbutrin?

Take Wellbutrin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Too much of this medicine can increase your risk of a seizure.

Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow it whole.

Do not stop using Wellbutrin suddenly, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to safely stop using this medicine.

This medicine can cause you to have a false positive drug screening test. If you provide a urine sample for drug screening, tell the laboratory staff that you are taking Wellbutrin.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Well, I guess I throw in something good here. I think it's very effective. I take it to control adult ADHD and minor depression and it works for me with no side effects but a bigger tendency to get eyestrain headaches. I've been on it for a year and my weight has stayed the same. The people around me find me to be much better. I take 150 mgs of XL and did try to up it with my doctor for winter blues, but it made me really agitated, so we dropped back and all was fine.

I don't find it to be activating or "speedy", more stabilizing. I did stop altogether once for 10 days, as it was lost on vacation, and at the end of the week, I was back to my old self--too busy and acting afool. Went back on and felt better again.

I do have 2 friends that tried it for smoking, and it made them feel terrible.

For depression, I think it's just the ticket for some, and start with the lowest dose first.

    Good luck!

BAD!!! OMG I hated it! I felt so sad all the time...without feeling sad. Kind of like when you know you're hungry but you're so hungry that you don't feel it anymore. I wanted to cry but tears wouldn't come. I was always angry.

    I hated it so badly.

i think its a bad drug. i took it twice once to quit smoking, which didnt help cuz i was a nervous wreck and the second time was for depression which made it worse. different meds do everyone different but every 1 in my family that has taken it has had bad reactions to it.
