Generac Generator runs but produces NO POWER?

5500W Portable Generac Generator with Generac Engine.

Runs perfectly fine but will not produce electricity. My father said that he believes that he overloaded it. We have looked for fuses/breakers etc... but all seem to be good. Where is the next place to look?

We have checked the Breakers/connections etc...

You get about 3 volts at the 110 outlet. Sounds like the brush holders may be the next place to look.

Update 2:

Like I said, all of the electrical is fine, it has to be aomething inside...

You can get a manual for the generator at Generac's web site. Take a look at the wiring diagram to assist while troubleshooting.

Depending on the model, there may be a regulator board inside the electrical panel which may have failed, you may need replacement brushes, or you may need to flash the field coil.

I have two procedures for field flashing on my generator page...

It should have a reset button on the end of the generator, you will have to push hard and hold for a couple of seconds. If this does not help, it could be the reset has been destroyed. If this is not the problem you could also check the 110 outlet on the generator one of the wires could have come loose or blown loose when overloaded. If none of these are the problem you may have a bad generator which would be almost expensive as a new generator.

Have you checked the breakers/reset circuit w/an ohm meter?

If that unit has brushes, check the brush holders.

There are several 'brands' (same manuacturer) that uses plastic brush holders that fail when they get too hot.

Too hot in many cases is well within normal operating conditions - go figure...

Not especially sure of the working of a generator but (Just call me wrong if they don't have one) you might try checking the alternator because I think that's how a generator produces electricity. Might have fried that, would explain it.

Check to see if the outlets are GFI. If so, there is a reset button on them.

Did you ever get it fixed? My IQ2000 is doing the same thing.
